‘Where All Things Are Pure And Of Good Report’: The Doctrinal Theology, Religious Practice, And Media Manipulation Of The Christian Science Church, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR

The Church of Christ, Scientist is 21st century religious movement that is facing considerable challenges to its existence on many fronts. The church is bound to an unalterable religious theology and intractable management structure established by Mary Baker Eddy, its 19th century founder. For more than a century, the church has followed Mrs. Eddy’s example and successfully manipulated the media to control dissemination of information. Recent financial crisis and legal dissent has generated unprecedented dissent, both inside and outside Christian Science. This research looks at how church leadership struggles to address 21st century problems with its 19th century frameworks.

The Christian Practice Of Everyday Life Series, William Cavanaugh

William T. Cavanaugh

The Christian Practice of Everyday Life series presents specifically Christian perspectives on some of the most prevalent contemporary practices of everyday life. The books in this series are motivated by the conviction that, in the contemporary context, Christians must actively demonstrate that their allegiance to the God of Jesus Christ always takes priority over secular structures that compete for our loyalty--including the state, the market, race, class, gender, and other functional idolatries.

Eucharistie Et Mondialisation: La Liturgie Comme Acte Politique, William Cavanaugh Dec 2000

Eucharistie Et Mondialisation: La Liturgie Comme Acte Politique, William Cavanaugh

William T. Cavanaugh

"Balthasar, Globalization, And The Problem Of The One And The Many", William T. Cavanaugh Dec 2000

"Balthasar, Globalization, And The Problem Of The One And The Many", William T. Cavanaugh

William T. Cavanaugh

In "Balthasar, Globalization, and the Problem of the One and the Many," William T. Cavanaugh sets forth a theological reading of globalization as an attempt to resolve the problem of the one and the many through an "aesthetics"--a "way of configuring space"--that "abstracts human relations . . . from their concrete embodiment in the local and the particular." Balthasar’s centering of the one-many relation on the concrete universality of Christ, Cavanaugh argues, points us towards an alternative aesthetics (and dramatics) in which the particular is given its particularity precisely by its incorporation into the universal," the eucharistic body of Christ. …
