Christian Reconstructionism And The Christian World Mission, Larry Poston

Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship

Christian Reconstructionism is a movement which seeks to expand the kingdom of God in an external and institutional fashion. Advocates promote obedience to the Mosaic Law and seek to transform the political, economic, judicial, and social institutions of every nation into structures that would be modern equivalents of Old Testament Israel. For Reconstructionists, who are postmillennialists, this process fulfills the great commission. This essay shows that contrary to the missiological paradigm of Reconstructionism, the apostles of the New Testament operated in accordance with an internal and personal approach to salvation, allowing for culturally flexible philosophies of evangelism and discipleship which …

Mary And The Biblical Heritage Jan 1995

Mary And The Biblical Heritage

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

Throughout the ages, the Church and her teachers often acknowledged that the fourfold Gospel offers only a limited number of passages that feature the Mother of Jesus. Undaunted, the great doctors of the early Church and the theologians of the Middle Ages found abundant resources for their meditation concerning Mary in the Jewish Scriptures and literature related to the New Testament. The theological premise that God is the principal author of the entire Bible led them to find hints and images of the Messiah everywhere. Recognizing that the link of Jesus to the people of Israel is Mary, his Mother, …

"Murder And Mystery Mormon Style": Violence As Mediation In American Popular Culture, Terryl Givens Jan 1995

"Murder And Mystery Mormon Style": Violence As Mediation In American Popular Culture, Terryl Givens

English Faculty Publications

Terryl Givens's discussion of popular representations of Mormonism ("'Murder and Mystery Mormon Style': Violence and Mediation in American Popular Culture ) is a case in point, emphasizing the violence inherent in the acts of sociocultural and fictional mediation that have tried to contain the heretical challenge of Mormon theocracy. Mormonism has a complex cultural identity, as a religious group clearly outside the American mainstream and yet historically and ethnically American to the core. Nineteenth-century fictional representations of Mormonism tended to demonize the religion while at the same time deploring the violence of anti-Mormon bigotry; such representations mediated social violence …
