The Social Conscience Of The Saint John's Bible I -- The Invitation To Forgive, Today And Always, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The Bible is not a safe book. It confronts, disturbs and challenges as well as being comforting, instructive and convicting. As arguably the most impactful book in human history, the reason is that it continues to speak to contemporary audiences -- sometimes in ways that sometimes surprise us -- today and always.

Second Criticality— An Interdisciplinary Approach To The New Testament And Its Contexts, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

In my just-released introduction to the New Testament published by Abingdon1 I find myself trying to make several contributions that make this something of a new and serviceable approach. First, I proceed in canonical order, dividing the book into three parts (the Gospels and Jesus, Acts and the writings of Paul, General Letters and Revelation) beginning each chapter with laying out from three to six crises or background issues that help the reader appreciate the contexts in which the twenty-seven books of the New Testament were written. Nearly sixty crises and contextual issues are outlined overall, and I feel this …

Review of John D. Roth (ed.), Constantine Revisited: Leithart, Yoder, and the Constantinian Debate (Eugene, OR: Pickwick Publications, 2013). xvi + 200 pp. ISBN 978-1- 61097-819-4

How are we to understand the historical and theological legacy of Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor? Some would say that his conversion signals the initiation of a ‘Constantinian shift’ in the church’s self-understanding, the adoption of a heretical Christendom mentality. This shift, marked by an unsavoury union of church and empire, ultimately meant that the church forsook the peaceful politics of Jesus and adopted the worldly politics of the sword. ‘Constantinianism’, thus …

Fumitaka Matsuoka. Out of Silence: Emerging Themes in Asian American Churches. Wipf & Stock Pub., 2009. 178 pages. ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1606081617

The issue of cultural marginalization and forced retreat is one of the key focal points in Fumitaka Matsuoka’s Out of Silence: Emerging Themes in Asian American Churches. In that double cultural jeopardy, he points out, the Asian American church has served two functions for the people who are part of it. First, the church has been the reservoir of the original Asian cultural and linguistic heritage. In these churches the people celebrate their own culture and practice …

Hagiography, Sunggu Yang

Jon Boorstin proposes three purposes for film production – voyeuristic, vicarious, and visceral (Boorstin). Scrutinized in light of Boorstin’s proposal, hagiographical films are most likely to have three purposes imbedded in three generic types: investigation, verification, and veneration. In most cases, hagiographical films make biblical references, either textually or visually, in order to maximize each type’s purpose.

Foreword To John's Gospel In New Perspective, Paul N. Anderson Jan 2015

Foreword To John's Gospel In New Perspective, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Over the last half century or more of Johannine scholarship, three issues have been of primary critical concern. One subject of interest has been the literary origin and composition of the Fourth Gospel. A second has been the application of new-literary analyses to the Johannine narrative, wherein the literary artistry and rhetorical design of the text is studied in order to discern how John’s message is conveyed in the interest of better understanding what is being said. A third area of interest has been a sustained interest in the Johannine situation, seeking to learn more about the history of Johannine …

"On Seeking The Truth (And Being Found By It) -- A Christocentric Double Search" (Chapter 11 Of Befriending Truth: Quaker Perspectives), Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The Religious Society of Friends emerged in great synergy with "the Seekers" of Northwest England three-and-a-half centuries ago, and they still have a great deal to offer the seekers of the 21st Century. In a day and age where more and more young people are registering as "none" when it comes to their religious affiliation, there nonetheless abides a deep hunger for spiritual reality, which some religious institutions fail to deliver. Because a Quaker spirituality of education envisions the classroom as "a meeting for worship in which learning is welcome," the quest for truth is a part of all disciplines, …

Augustinianisms And Thomisms (Chapter Nine Of The Cambridge Companion To Political Theology), Eric Gregory, Joseph Clair Jan 2015

Augustinianisms And Thomisms (Chapter Nine Of The Cambridge Companion To Political Theology), Eric Gregory, Joseph Clair

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "The standard linage of Augustine and Aquinas that emerges in twentieth-century textbooks of political philosophy is that of two fundamentally opposed theological approaches to the political. Augustine, in one corner, is the clear-eyed realist, convinced that political society is fallen, mired in the consequences of original sin and the contingent necessity to restrain evil, vice, and sin. Aquinas, in the other corner, is the more cheerful Aristotelian, who emphasizes the inherent goodness and naturalness of political society and its beneficial purposes for human flourishing.' These contrasting visions continue to animate diverse Christian understandings of the limits and possibilities of …

Review of Political Affections: Civic Participation and Moral Theology. By JOSHUA HORDERN. Pp. 336. Oxford: Oxford University Press. 2013. ISBN: 978-0-19-964681-4.

“Fire tends upwards, stone downwards. By their weight they are moved and seek their proper place ... My love is my weight: wherever I go my love is what brings me there” (Augustine, Confessions 13.9). Augustine long ago recognized that affections are an inescapable dimension of human existence. Why, then, have emotions and affections been so largely neglected, even opposed, in political philosophy? In Political Affections, Joshua Hordern, University Lecturer in Christian Ethics at the University of Oxford and …

Quakers And Scripture, Howard R. Macy Jan 2015

Quakers And Scripture, Howard R. Macy

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

This chapter explores how the Quakers’ use of the Bible has developed, recognizing changes both in the Friends movement and in its historical and cultural settings. Friends’ approaches to Scripture have varied widely as they have responded over time to the influences of the Enlightenment, revivalism, fundamentalism, Modernism, and other factors. The chapter describes how Quakers have viewed the authority and inspiration of the Bible and how they have held the importance of the Bible in tension with the inward teaching of Christ, whom they refer to as the ‘Word of God’. The chapter also contrasts various forms of Bible …
