LEN NERVOUSLY EYED THE DIPLOMAS on the wall, the titles on the bookshelf, and the wilted leaves on the plant I routinely neglect before telling me why he came for help. "I guess I'm here because you're a Christian and I need help dealing with my feelings ." Within this first thirty seconds of therapy, Len had revealed some important information about himself. He was nervous. He wanted to talk with a Christian, probably because he was also a Christian. He was troubled with uncomfortable - feelings, but wanted to be selective about the help he received. Len, like so …

An Interview With A Working Mom, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1991

An Interview With A Working Mom, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The organizing theme of this issue is the well-being of the Christian family, and one of the acute pressures felt within the family unit today is the plight of the working mother. The fact is that the familiar ideal of the two-parent, single-career family is the exception rather than the norm. With the increase of single-parent families, economic strain~, and opportunities for talented women to seek professional careers, new stresses face the home. So how can Christian families manage more effectively, and how can the church alleviate family burdens? Perhaps an interview with a working mom will point the way …

On The Virgin Mary, Inclusive Ministry, ... And Christmas, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Hail, Favored One! The Lord is with you!" were the words announced to Mary by the angel Gabriel (Luke 1:28). After regrouping from the shock of it, and after receiving support from her cousin, Elizabeth, Mary exclaimed, "My soul magnifies (and amplifies) the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God, my Savior!" (vv. 46-47) What if young Mary would have said "Nd' to God's plan to use her in His unfolding plan of salvation? Or, what if Joseph or Elizabeth would have discouraged her from following the Lord's leading in her life? Heaven and earth would be all …

Excerpt: "Normally, the editor's essay comments upon some aspect of the magazine's central theme, but this issue is an exception. Given the crisis in the Persian Gulf, one cannot responsibly be silent about it. On the other hand, with virtually every branch of the media already commenting on the crisis around the clock, it's hard to say anything new ... that's still worth reading."

Excerpt: "Elton Trueblood tells the story about the airport in Dayton, Ohio, that serves as a symbol of our Christian calling in the world. At Dayton's airport there used to be a large globe, a model of the earth, that displayed the global extent of NCR's business enterprise. This rotating globe was about ten feet tall and provided the perfect landmark for the meeting-point at the airport."

Open Worship As Corporate Altar, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1991

Open Worship As Corporate Altar, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Open worship is one of those traditions Friends embrace, but often we do so without much thought as to how to use the time meaningfully. The tendency is to be uncomfortable with too much silence and to fill the "empty" space with words. After all, silence is a strange and foreign commodity within today's noisy society. Turning on the television or stereo becomes a semiautomatic reflex when faced with the shock of a quiet room. Seldom do we find ourselves able to pray for more than three or four minutes because of acute "spiritual attention deficit." We crave entertainment, …
