The Fourth Gospel has been called "a stream in which a child can wade and an elephant can swim." John has long been used as a primer for newcomers to faith, and it continues to be a favorite devotional reading for young and old alike. On the other hand, John continues to be an ongoing storm center among the finest of Bible scholars and theologians. As active in the church as in the academy, Torrance has diligently served the ecumenical movement, especially in relations and discussions with the Anglican and the Orthodox communions. His many honours include appointment as moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1976 and being awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion in 1979.

Most people who are familiar with the writings of George Fox know either his Journal or his letters. Some will have heard of his Book of Miracles, but few will actually have seen a copy of it, as the first two printings of Cadbury's edition were quite small, and until now, copies are found primarily in library collections.
