The Continuing (Ir) Relevance Of C.S. Lewis, Robert Macswain Apr 2023

The Continuing (Ir) Relevance Of C.S. Lewis, Robert Macswain

Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal

found myself profoundly frustrated with the polarization that became evident between Lewis’ friends and foes, devotees and detractors. At the extremes of this debate were those who apparently regarded Lewis’ work as, for all intents and purposes, Holy Writ; at the other end of it were those who, for whatever reason, regarded Lewis with disdain and contempt. Sane, balanced, objective, sympathetically-critical and critically-sympathetic assessments seemed so rare as to be almost non-existent. The devotional attitude was largely characteristic of the United States, where I had grown up; and the disdain and contempt seemed especially prevalent in England, where I was …

Reviewed Work: Christianizing Egypt. Syncretism And Local Worlds In Late Antiquity By David Frankfurter, Dana Robinson Jan 2019

Reviewed Work: Christianizing Egypt. Syncretism And Local Worlds In Late Antiquity By David Frankfurter, Dana Robinson

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

David Frankfurter’s newest work takes a fresh look at the landscape of local religious activity in late antique Egypt. Frankfurter expands on the theoretical model he offered in Religion in Roman Egypt (Princeton, 1998), which conceptualized the late antique transformations of Egyptian religion as a shift in idiom and social location, from large temple centers to households and local experts, rather than a decline in traditional piety. Here he changes his perspective from the continuity of traditional religion into the Christian era, to examine the creation of a local and regional Christianity in the fifth and sixth centuries.

Books, Theology, And Hens: The Correspondence And Friendship Of C. S. Lewis And Dorothy L. Sayers, Laura K. Simmons, Gary L. Tandy

Faculty Publications - Department of English

"That Lewis and Sayers had much in common and that their lives intersected in a number of interesting ways throughout their careers is common knowledge for even the casual follower of either author. What does not seem to have been appreciated or explained sufficiently in the scholarship to date is the nature of the friendship between these two influential Christian authors. Therefore, it is this friendship we wish to shed light on, using as our primary source the correspondence between Lewis and Sayers from 1942-1957. In addition, we look at what the biographers of each author have to say about …

Beyond The Inward Light: The Quaker Poet In Community, Bill Jolliff Jan 2016

Beyond The Inward Light: The Quaker Poet In Community, Bill Jolliff

Faculty Publications - Department of English

It's a privilege to be granted a chance tq address a gathering like this: a room full of people whose Quaker way of life and thought are so very central to their work that they spend time and resources to get together and talk about it. We've been blessed with a common gift, and it isn't a small one.

That said, I suspect I'm not the only one here who sometimes wonders how, or even if, what I do matters. Yet even among you, my group of fellow self-doubters, I must lobby for my own elevated position: as a poet …

Eternal Goods (Chapter Five Of Discerning The Good In The Letters And Sermons Of Augustine), Joseph Clair Jan 2016

Eternal Goods (Chapter Five Of Discerning The Good In The Letters And Sermons Of Augustine), Joseph Clair

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

For Augustine, eternal goods are the virtues and goods of genuine friendship as they will exist in eternity—as the full expression of love for God and neighbor-love. This chapter considers such goods in their plurality and temporality. That is, it treats them as human beings are able to comprehend and pursue them—and sometimes even obtain and experience them—in this life. To do so, this chapter revisits Augustine’s letters to Ecdicia and Macedonius to take a closer look at where each succeeded and failed in their pursuit of higher, eternal goods. Augustine’s vision of obtaining eternal goods involves a process in …

A Survey Of Children’S And Young Adult Literature Collections In Academic Libraries Of Christian Higher Education, Melissa Atkinson

The Christian Librarian

Children’s and young adult literature collections have an important place in an academic library. Most often, these collections go unnoticed by many in academia, who may regard children’s literature as irrelevant to the mission of the academic library. In reality, these important collections support institutional curriculum and include interdisciplinary resources used in many academic departments. Findings are reported of a survey conducted of private Christian colleges and universities regarding their management of children’s and young adult literature collections which seeks to identify current practices and procedures being utilized. Results from the survey highlight use, promotion, and management.

Augustinianisms And Thomisms (Chapter Nine Of The Cambridge Companion To Political Theology), Eric Gregory, Joseph Clair Jan 2015

Augustinianisms And Thomisms (Chapter Nine Of The Cambridge Companion To Political Theology), Eric Gregory, Joseph Clair

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "The standard linage of Augustine and Aquinas that emerges in twentieth-century textbooks of political philosophy is that of two fundamentally opposed theological approaches to the political. Augustine, in one corner, is the clear-eyed realist, convinced that political society is fallen, mired in the consequences of original sin and the contingent necessity to restrain evil, vice, and sin. Aquinas, in the other corner, is the more cheerful Aristotelian, who emphasizes the inherent goodness and naturalness of political society and its beneficial purposes for human flourishing.' These contrasting visions continue to animate diverse Christian understandings of the limits and possibilities of …

Caroline Emelia Stephen, Kathleen A. Heininge

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "Caroline Emelia Stephen, born on December 8, 1834, was notable for a number of reasons. Her connections were impressive: she was the unmarried daughter of Sir James Stephen (the noted Under-Secretary for the Colonies in 1836-1847), the sister of Leslie Stephen (author of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography), sister-in-law to Minny Thackeray Stephen and Anny Thackeray Ritchie (daughters of William Makepeace Thackeray), and aunt to Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell. Her grandfather, also Sir James Stephen, wrote the legislation that ended slavery in England. Known as a Quaker mystic, she is credited with bringing about the revival of …
