Global Human Thriving: A Christian Perspective, Christoffer H. Grundmann Dec 2009

Global Human Thriving: A Christian Perspective, Christoffer H. Grundmann

Theology Faculty Presentations

(excerpt) "Talking about global human thriving from a decidedly religious point of view requires interpreting a particular religious tradition in light of today’s ubiquitous ecological, economic, and political challenges. One cannot any longer stay content with a monologic explanation of happenings based on an authoritarian, unilateral interpretation of holy writ and the wisdom of old, at least not according to the Christian perception of life and human responsibility, because global issues like climate change, water scarcity, and nuclear overkill—to mention only a few—indiscriminately threaten the continuation of all of life as known so far. These issues compel us to pursue …

A Tri-Disciplinary Analysis Of Religion, Alicia Wallace Dec 2009

A Tri-Disciplinary Analysis Of Religion, Alicia Wallace

Social Sciences

This paper analyzes religion using a multi-disciplinary approach. Studying the Social Sciences exposes one to an opportunity not just to learn a single discipline, but three, and this unique learning experience can teach one to look at the world’s phenomena with a multi-perspective view. Using a tri-disciplinary approach when exploring topics can broaden ones outlook on how there are many ways to explore and investigate a topic in greater detail. By using Anthropological, Sociological and Geographical theoretical perspectives one can understand a topic more fully by using a multi-perspective approach when exploring this diverse world culturally, socially and physically.

Squaring God's Books, Timothy J. Burbery

English Faculty Research

The Word and the World, a splendid collection of essays, sheds light on matter of religion-science debate in a fresh, even startling way. Rather than considering how religion in general may have nurtured or hampered the rise of science, this book examines the role of biblical exegesis in the formation of the early scientific method. Featuring twelve essays by a variety of American, English, German, and Swedish thinkers-two teach at Catholic universities, the other ten at secular institutions--The Word and the World is organized around the provocative thesis that the new science and biblical interpretation, "far from being …

How Does One Become Spiritual? The Spiritual Modeling Inventory Of Life Environments (Smile), Doug Oman, Carl E. Thoresen, Crystal L. Park, Philip R. Shaver, Ralph W. Hood, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

We report psychometric properties, correlates and underlying theory of the Spiritual Modeling Index of Life Environments (SMILE), a measure of perceptions of spiritual models, defined as everyday and prominent people who have functioned for respondents as exemplars of spiritual qualities, such as compassion, self-control, or faith. Demographic, spiritual, and personality correlates were examined in an ethnically diverse sample of college students from California, Connecticut, and Tennessee (N=1010). A summary measure of model influence was constructed from perceived models within family, school, religious organization, and among prominent individuals from both tradition and media. The SMILE, based on concepts from Bandura's (1986) …

Returning To The Sources: The Literature Of Christian Librarianship, Gregory A. Smith

By definition, a research study explores new intellectual territory yet builds on previous inquiry that has led up to it. However, many sources that explore the connections between Christian faith and the information professions fail to acknowledge the existence of prior discourse on the subject. The author has assembled a database of more than 450 sources that discuss topics such as philosophy and ethics of librarianship from a Christian perspective; the mediation of Christian/religious information in various library contexts; Christian, religious, and theological publishing; and more. Insights from these sources can help readers develop professionally and engage in productive dialogue …

Combating A Religious Radical Ideology V. Suppressing Islamic Opposition: Jordan’S Approach To Counterterrorism, Abeer Ghazi Jarrar May 2009

Combating A Religious Radical Ideology V. Suppressing Islamic Opposition: Jordan’S Approach To Counterterrorism, Abeer Ghazi Jarrar

Cornell Law School Inter-University Graduate Student Conference Papers

In the aftermath of 9/11, criminal law reform in Jordan was part of the worldwide expansion of criminal laws facilitated by UNSC Resolution 1373 that was enacted under mandatory Chapter VII of the UN Charter. The introduced criminal law amendments were largely offered as a symbolic response to 9/11; it was built on the assumption of inadequacy of criminal law without fully understanding the dimensions of deterrence. Probably with the exception of the new laws against the financing of terrorism, the state had a whole range of extraordinary measures available if not morally, then practically, to counter terrorism.

Jordan’s experience …

From Secularism Into Modified Pluralism: Comprehensive Application Of John Rawls’S Justice As Fairness Theory In Defining State And Religion Relationship, Sigit Ardianto

The task of defining the most effective state and religion relationship has been a daunting one. Courts and jurists in different parts of the world have been engaged in this chore for centuries. This paper aims to investigate the state-religion relationship conundrum and the shift from secularism to pluralism and examine modification of pluralism through comprehensive adoption of John Rawls’s justice as fairness theory. The focus of this paper will be placed on the state-religion relationship in the United States and Indonesia whilst also observing the practice in other countries.

A Value Oriented Legal Theory For Muslim Countries In The 21st Century: A Comparative Study Of Both Islamic Law And Common Law Systems, Rahma Hersi

Cornell Law School Inter-University Graduate Student Conference Papers

A legal tradition is not the same thing as a legal system, although the legal system inevitably forms part of the legal tradition and vice versa, a legal system may be used to refer to an operational set of rules, procedures and institutions. This paper will take a critical look at the legal sources used in both the Islamic Law and Common law systems as well the methodologies interpreting these sources. The pluralistic nature of many of the extant legal systems, calls for an analysis of the interpretation of law and the related sciences. Whereas the spread of globalization in …

When Corporate Policies And Consumer Values Collide: Examining The Relationship Between Religion And Controversial Business Decisions, Krist R. G. Swimberghe Apr 2009

When Corporate Policies And Consumer Values Collide: Examining The Relationship Between Religion And Controversial Business Decisions, Krist R. G. Swimberghe

Doctoral Dissertations

Religion appears to play a very important role in people's lives in the United States. Some companies, however, continue to make business decisions which appear to be contrary to the value systems of a majority of consumers in the United States. Although past descriptive research has confirmed that religiousness influences consumers' and marketing managers' ethical judgments of their own behavior, this research has not explored the influence of religion in the buyer-seller dyad. To fill this gap in the consumer behavior literature, this study uses the Hunt-Vitell theory of ethics to help explain how consumers' religiosity influences their ethical judgments …

American Civil Religion: An Idea Whose Time Is Past, Frederick Mark Gedicks Mar 2009

American Civil Religion: An Idea Whose Time Is Past, Frederick Mark Gedicks

Faculty Scholarship

From the founding of the United States, Americans have understood loyalty to their country as a religious and not just a civic commitment. The idea of a 'civil religion' that defines the collective identity of a nation originates with Rousseau, and was adapted to the United States Robert Bellah, who suggested that a peculiarly American civil religion has underwritten government and civil society in the United States.

Leaving aside the question whether civil religion has ever truly unified all or virtually all Americans, I argue that it excludes too many Americans to function as such a unifying force in the …
