Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry
Although shared practices are central to religious socialization, relationships empower such sharing. Familial relationships are the most durable and effective of such relationships, even when family form varies. Though many ethnic and faith groups tend to emphasize patriarchal leadership within congregations and families, in fact, matriarchs serve as the spiritual anchors for succeeding generations in a surprising number of three (and more) generation families. Data supporting this assertion are a part of the results of the Three Generations Project, a study of faith families within Churches of Christ.
Review Of Richard T. Hughes And James L. Gorman, Reviving The Ancient Faith: The Story Of Churches Of Christ In America, 3rd Edition (Grand Rapids, Mi: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co., 2024), Douglas A. Foster
Journal of Discipliana
With skill and insight James Gorman has brought Richard Hughes’s 1996 classic history of the character of Churches of Christ to the present (2022), incorporating new scholarship since the 1980s, adding original material, and streamlining the narrative. In the first edition Hughes developed his interpretive premises in detail with extensive examples in two sections containing fourteen chapters (“The Making of a Sect” and “The Making of a Denomination”). Gorman has crafted a third section (“The Fragmentation of a Denomination”) from material taken from Hughes’s section two, adding an entirely new chapter on the twenty-first century, and reducing the book’s total …

Show Us How You Do It, Jonathan Underwood
Tenor of Our Times
Published in 2008, Edward J. Robinson’s Show Us How You Do It: Marshall Keeble and the Rise of Black Churches of Christ in the United States, 1914-1968 poses a thesis that Marshall Keeble had such a strong impact on the formation of African American Churches of Christ in the twentieth century because of his willingness to work alongside white supporters of his ministry, thus making two fellowships within the Churches of Christ that reflected the broader racial, social, and religious context of the United States. Robinson accomplishes defending his thesis by first describing Keeble's upbringing and influences in the church. …

Carl Spain’S Waves: How A Powerful Lecture Ended Segregation In Church Of Christ Colleges, Dyron Daughrity
Journal of Discipliana
In 2018, the Carl Spain Center on Race Studies and Spiritual Action was founded by Dr. Jerry Taylor of Abilene Christian University in honor of a man ahead of his time. The Center memorializes Carl Spain, a courageous professor who, in 1960, delivered a scorching lecture at Abilene Christian's Bible Lectureship entitled: “Modern Challenges to Christian Morals.” The lecture publicly excoriated the college for rejecting African American students from attending it. This paper investigates the man and the lecture that tipped the scales towards integration in Church of Christ colleges.

Review Of Leonard Allen's Book "In The Great Stream: Imagining Churches Of Christ In The Christian Tradition", James L. Gorman
Journal of Discipliana
Leonard Allen, Dean of Lipscomb University’s College of Bible and Ministry, has been helping Churches of Christ engage their history and theology for four decades. This book constitutes Allen’s boldest attempt to reveal the pitfalls of the anti-tradition posture of many Churches of Christ and, conversely, the riches of embracing the Great Tradition as an ally in the challenging twenty-first century context. Allen urges Churches of Christ to rediscover and reclaim early Christian Tradition, following the examples of Robert Webber, J. I. Packer, D. H. Williams, and others. Allen lays out a clear proposal for communal formation that deliberately utilizes …

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry
This essay is the summary of a research project focused on how the minister-elder relationship in Churches of Christ can facilitate missional transformation in an established church. Twenty-five reputable congregations of Churches of Christ were researched that were profiled as “Churches That Work” by The Christian Chronicle from 2006-2013. A survey was conducted of these congregations’ elders and ministers assessing their leadership practices and perspectives. Four congregations were selected based on results of the survey and qualitative strategies of interviewing, focus groups, observation, and document gathering were used. Five patterns of a missional polity developed: elders as nurturing pastors, ministers …
