[Introduction To] Parley P. Pratt: The Apostle Paul Of Mormonism, Terryl Givens, Matthew J. Grow Oct 2011

[Introduction To] Parley P. Pratt: The Apostle Paul Of Mormonism, Terryl Givens, Matthew J. Grow

Bookshelf

After Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt was the most influential figure in early Mormon history and culture. Missionary, pamphleteer, theologian, historian, and martyr, Pratt was perennially stalked by controversy--regarded, he said, "almost as an Angel by thousands and counted an Imposter by tens of thousands."

Tracing the life of this colorful figure from his hardscrabble origins in upstate New York to his murder in 1857, Terryl Givens and Matthew Grow explore the crucial role Pratt played in the formation and expansion of early Mormonism. One of countless ministers inspired by the antebellum revival movement known as the …

Ars Musice, Johannes De Grocheio, Constant J. Mews, John N. Crossley, Catherine Jeffreys, Leigh Mckinnon, Carol J. Williams Oct 2011

Ars Musice, Johannes De Grocheio, Constant J. Mews, John N. Crossley, Catherine Jeffreys, Leigh Mckinnon, Carol J. Williams

TEAMS Varia

Ars musice, composed in Paris during the late thirteenth century, reflects Johannes de Grocheio's awareness of the complexity of the task of describing music. As the editors note in their introduction, "Grocheio is aware of the enormous range of types of music performed in different ways in different places. How can he impose order on this enormous subject matter? He decided to resolve this question by structuring his discussion around the practice of music that he observed in the city of Paris, organized into three main 'branches': music of the people (musica vulgalis), composite or regular, 'which they call measured …

Notes For Lectures On Catechlsm, William H. T. Dau, James Melchsner Sep 2011

Notes For Lectures On Catechlsm, William H. T. Dau, James Melchsner

Notes for Lectures on Catechism by Professor William Dau

A mimeographed copy of Professor Dau's Notes for Lectures on Catechism was among my father's papers – Ernest Melchsner, St. Louis seminary class of 1922. Biblical texts from the New King James -Version have been added to the references.

With the assistance of Rev. Daniel Preus and the resource desk at Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, IN, It has been determined that the catechism referred to in these Notes was the German-English Schwan Catechism from 1912.

Some formatting has been added, i.e. dividing long sections into paragraphs to make It more readable. At times the other than English word phrases …

The Glossa Ordinaria On Romans, Michael Scott Woodward May 2011

The Glossa Ordinaria On Romans, Michael Scott Woodward

TEAMS Commentary Series

"The Gloss on Romans is a collection of sources from many periods and places, which accounts for its inconsistencies. And this is what gives the Gloss much of its charm. . . . The twelfth century was an age of gathering sources and commentaries, in theology (Lombard's Sentences), canon law (Gratian's Decretum), and biblical studies (the Glossa ordinaria). Education began to flourish into what would become universities, where the master's role was to elucidate traditional, authoritative texts. And chief among these was the Bible, not standing alone but with the accompanying Gloss." - from the introduction

Dance And Contextualization In The South Pacific Islands - Encounters With Adventist Christian Faith, Jennifer Jean Jones May 2011

Dance And Contextualization In The South Pacific Islands - Encounters With Adventist Christian Faith, Jennifer Jean Jones

Human Subject Research Archive

This dissertation investigated the attitudes and perceptions of the students and faculty towards dance for religious events at Pacific Adventist University (PAU) in New Guinea. It aimed to help in leading a climate for change within PAU towards a model for contextualizing traditional dance for God's Kingdom ministry. A directed study of the biblical precedents regarding dance served as a foundation to the rationale of engaging in dance for worship. Some sources in Adventist Church theology on dance in relation to their relevance in the South Pacific was discussed. The role of traditional dance and how it influences worship music …

Relational Leadership: A Study Of Organizational Health And Clergy Within The Wesleyan Church, Brian Voyght Bradford May 2011

Relational Leadership: A Study Of Organizational Health And Clergy Within The Wesleyan Church, Brian Voyght Bradford

ATS Dissertations

In many large churches (over one thousand in weekend worship attendance) today, a vast relational disconnect exists between senior pastors and pastoral staff team members. As a result, many staff pastors feel unsatisfied in their team roles and relationships as well as feeling devalued as leader. This relational deficiency frequently results in a lack of communication, trust, and belief in and with the senior leader. The staff pastor’s productivity decreases and the church ceases to be what God designed it to be—a place of relational and social connection.

The purpose of this study was to determine characteristics of relational leadership …

ATS Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to design curriculum and teach a course in advanced homiletics for a group of Master of Arts (MA) in pastoral ministry students in the North Caucasus Bible Institute in Prokhladnyy, Russia, in order to increase their understanding of the theory and practice of preaching, to improve their integration of homiletical theory into the students’ practice of preaching, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the training.

The curriculum examined theology of preaching, the role of the preacher, the role of the Holy Spirit in preaching, the principles of biblical interpretation, preparation, communication, reflection, and preaching …

Biblical Preaching, Ovidiu Ionel Dragan May 2011

Biblical Preaching, Ovidiu Ionel Dragan

ATS Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to help young pastors improve their preaching. The literature review examined the theological foundation of becoming more biblically accurate in preaching. This study emphasized the importance and usefulness of the Word of God for change and transformation of the lives of those who hear preaching. Biblical preaching is detailed by images and metaphors that help any minister to understand the call, message, authority, and practice of biblical preaching. The findings suggest that during the study a shift occurred within a group of young pastors from Baptist Community in Arad, Romania. Among the findings was …

Wisdom Christology: How Jesus Becomes God's Wisdom For Us, Daniel J. Ebert Apr 2011

Wisdom Christology: How Jesus Becomes God's Wisdom For Us, Daniel J. Ebert

Faculty Books

The Explorations in Biblical Theology series addresses the need for quality literature that attracts believing readers to good theology and builds there up in their faith. Each title in the series combines solid content with accessibility and readability-a valuable addition to the library of any college student, thoughtful lay reader, seminarian, or pastor.

What is true wisdom? While contemporary culture locates it in self-absorption, the first-century apostles revealed how wisdom is located supremely in Jesus Christ. Daniel Ebert explains how Old Testament wisdom motifs are not only appropriated in New Testament Christology but also far surpassed in God's Son.

Every Tribe And Tongue: A Biblical Vision For Language In Society, Michael Pasquale, Nathan Bierma Apr 2011

Every Tribe And Tongue: A Biblical Vision For Language In Society, Michael Pasquale, Nathan Bierma

Alumni Book Gallery

Every Tribe and Tongue offers a way, first, to rediscover biblical stories and principles that relate to questions about immigration and societal multilingualism, and, second, to outline possible ways to guide thoughtful engagement in the discourse of the "public square" based on the biblical witness. We will try to show that, far from being an afterthought in the Bible, the call to love our neighbors and to gather people of every nation together in the worship of God is at the very core of the gospel message.

Two powerful passions animate this book from beginning to end. First, this work …

Theology Of Confessionist Dialogue: A Theology Of Religions In The Religious Situation In Korea, Young Seok Song Apr 2011

Theology Of Confessionist Dialogue: A Theology Of Religions In The Religious Situation In Korea, Young Seok Song

ATS Dissertations

This dissertation constructs a new theology of religions, naming it a confessionist dialogue. By examining the traditional and contemporary religious atmosphere of Korea, I demonstrate how Korean Christians have often had an anti-relational attitude toward other religions, which caused religious conflicts and created anti-social expression in Korea. I also show that only a few religious pluralists have engaged in an active dialogue with other religions in Korea. By survey research, I found that the majority of Korean Christians have acknowledged the necessity of relationship with other religions, but they have a fear of religious pluralism, which makes them hesitant to …
