Repentance And Return As Unifying Themes In The Book Of The Twelve, Gary E. Yates Dec 2013

Repentance And Return As Unifying Themes In The Book Of The Twelve, Gary E. Yates

Gary E Yates

Recent study on the Book of the Twelve has focused on these books as an editorial unity. This study focuses on how repentance and return are unifying themes for the Book of the Twelve as a whole. Israel's inadequate responses to the prophetic calls for repentance in the Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian periods requires that the Lord will act in more decisive ways in the eschatological era to bring about Israel's ultimately return.

Tracy Sayuki Tiemeier

The Los Angeles Hindu-Catholic Dialogue recently organized a workshop at Loyola Marymount University on Teaching Hinduism in Catholic High Schools (May 2010). Initiated by a Hindu member of the Dialogue who was disturbed by the World Religions textbook used in a local Catholic high school, the workshop's goal was to help teachers of World Religions at Catholic high schools teach Hindu traditions more accurately and respectfully. The daylong event featured sessions on Hindu Perspectives on Education, Resources and Strategies in Teaching Hinduism, and small group dialogues between Hindu speakers and attendees and Catholic teachers.

Reason Within The Bounds Of Religion: Assmann, Cohen, And The Possibilities Of Monotheism, Robert Erlewine

Robert Erlewine

Recent years have witnessed many actions, often violent and xenophobic, explicitly rooted in monotheistic intolerance. Perhaps, then, it should not be surprising that many secular-minded critics view monotheistic religions as not much more than intractable problems for democratic societies. Indeed, for such critics, the respective ages and histories of these traditions are not to be esteemed. Rather, these religions are simply primitive, and so they require domestication (or annihilation) by liberal values. Looking around the world today, one often wonders if it is even possible for modern sensibilities to be reconciled, or even to coexist, with the Abrahamic monotheisms and …

The Niebuhr Brothers For Armchair Theologians, Scott Paeth Dec 2013

The Niebuhr Brothers For Armchair Theologians, Scott Paeth

Scott R. Paeth

This volume offers a compelling introduction to the life, times, and theological thought of H. Richard and Reinhold Niebuhr--the two most important American theologians of the twentieth century. Although the Niebuhr brothers shared the same heritage and experienced many of the same formative moments, their thought diverged at key points as their lives and careers developed. Scott R. Paeth's expert introduction to the Niebuhr brothers explores this history and the enduring influence of the Niebuhrs on religious and political thought. This lively introduction, which includes witty illustrations from Ron Hill, is an essential resource for understanding these enduring theological figures.

Emergent Public Discourse And The Constitutional Debate In Tunisia: A Critical Narrative Analysis, Nathaniel Greenberg Nov 2013

Emergent Public Discourse And The Constitutional Debate In Tunisia: A Critical Narrative Analysis, Nathaniel Greenberg

Nathaniel Greenberg

The appointment of the Minister of Industry, the so-called “technocrat” Mehdi Jomaa, to form a caretaker government in Tunisia on the eve of the revolution’s third anniversary, threw into stark relief the country’s complex struggle for democracy following the January 14 revolution. The announcement came in the wake of the Islamist party Ennahdha’s sudden renunciation of the Prime Minister’s office in September, ostensibly a sign of cooperation in the face of mounting criticism surrounding the government’s failure to investigate the assassinations of two political opposition figures. A number of Western media outlets, including the New York Times, quickly absorbed the …

Stackhouse is one of the most prolific and influential American theologians of the last half century, and he has been widely recognized for his contributions to the emerging field of public theology. The Doctrine Of Baptism And Its Controversies, David C. Taylor Jr Nov 2013

The Doctrine Of Baptism And Its Controversies, David C. Taylor Jr

David C Taylor Jr

Throughout the history of Christianity, Baptism has been a topic of strong debate both theologically and practically. There are two major sections of debate that are currently fought in Christian circles. The first is the question of for whom is baptism intended? The second question is how should one be baptized? The questions have long been argued for both sides and there are favorable evidences for the various positions on all sides. The sides can be divided into two main groups, Protestants and Catholics. However, within the two main groups there are also sub-groups that add many beliefs to the …

Assimilation, Toleration, And The State's Interest In The Development Of Religious Doctrine, Richard Garnett Nov 2013

Assimilation, Toleration, And The State's Interest In The Development Of Religious Doctrine, Richard Garnett

Richard W Garnett

Thirty-five years ago, in the context of a church-property dispute, Justice William Brennan observed that government interpretation of religious doctrine and judicial intervention in religious disputes are undesirable, because when civil courts undertake to resolve [doctrinal] controversies..., the hazards are ever present of inhibiting the free development of religious doctrine and of implicating secular interests in matters of purely ecclesiastical concern. This statement, at first, seems wise and fittingly cautious, even unremarkable and obvious. On examination, though, it turns out to be intriguing, elusive, and misleading. Indeed, Justice Brennan's warning presents hazards of its own, and its premises - if …

The important identity of a responsible media is playing an unbiased role in reporting a matter without giving unnecessary hype to attract the attention of the gullible public with the object of making money and money only. After reporting properly the media can educate the public to form their own opinion in the matters of public interest. Throughout the centuries, the world has never existed without information and communication, hence the inexhaustible essence of mass media. The government has the power to either make or reject whatever that will exist within its environment. It also determines how free the mass media …

Does Political Islam Conflict With Secular Democracy? Philosophical Reflections On Religion And Politics, David Ingram Oct 2013

Does Political Islam Conflict With Secular Democracy? Philosophical Reflections On Religion And Politics, David Ingram

David Ingram

Abstract: This paper rebuts the thesis that political Islam conflicts with secular democracy. More precisely, it examines three sorts of claims that ostensibly support this thesis: (a) The Muslim religion is incompatible with secular democracy; (b) No Muslim country has instituted secular democracy; and (c) No movement seeking to advance its agenda as aggressively as political Islam does can do so with the degree of moderation required of a political party that is committed to secular democracy. Theologians, philosophers, and political scientists have debated (a) through (c) within the jurisdiction of their respective fields. I propose to combine these debates …
