Every Good Endeavor Author Katherine Alsdorf On Why Faith@Work Is Important, Katherine Leary Alsdorf
Theology of Work Project
More than ever before, humanity is in a crisis over work. People change jobs and careers 6 times or more in their lives. Robotics will threaten even professional level vocations over the next decade. Darwinian competition trumps teamwork and human dignity. Our work – our commitment to bring God’s truth, love, and human dignity to the work lives of all people – has never been so important! How can we better equip ourselves for our work, for our calling? How do we help others work in a world that is increasingly unaware of and even hostile to the hope of …

Executive Editor, Theology of Work Project
Adapted from a talk at the Faith@Work Summit, October 24, 2014
Probably everyone interested in faith and work knows some Bible passages related to work, but did you realize that those passages are not rare highlights, but representative samples of the Bible? To put it in biblical words, “The cattle on a thousand hills” are the Lord’s, not just the temple on the hill of Zion. Once I took off my church-polarized lenses, I saw that a lot of the Bible has to do with work. It’s impossible to summarize 859 …

The Soul Of The Movement (Short Version), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
In this speech at the 2014 Faith at Work Summit (Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary - Boston, MA), Pollard contends that people represent the only thing of eternal value in the global marketplace. Best Biblical Career Advice From Joseph, Bruce D. Baker
Best Biblical Career Advice From Joseph, Bruce D. Baker
SPU Works
The biblical character whose story best illustrates what we might think of today as a “career” is Joseph. His story fills roughly nine chapters in Genesis (37 – 45), a very large portion of the history of the patriarchs. Joseph’s path is an epic story of rising from the bottom to the top. In terms of vision, management and public service, he must be considered a standout success. But is this an example of “career”? It depends what you mean by “career.” Although the Bible does not offer much by way of prescriptive career advice, we can glean practical wisdom …

Capital In The Twenty-First Century: A Tale Without Morality, Bruce D. Baker
Capital In The Twenty-First Century: A Tale Without Morality, Bruce D. Baker
SPU Works
Thomas Piketty has given economists a lot to argue about, but their arguments miss the point of the book’s success. “Capital in the Twenty-First Century” is not a bestseller based on its economic merits. It’s a bestseller because it speaks to a deep moral anxiety. Confidence in capitalism has been shaken. The crisis of 2008 exposed weaknesses in the financialization of our economy. Piketty makes a valiant contribution to economic theory and history, but his empiricism succumbs ultimately to the same flaw John Paul II diagnosed in Marxism—it leads to an incoherent statement of moral order.

The Soul Of Korean Christianity: How The Shamans, Buddha, And Confucius Paved The Way For Jesus In The Land Of The Morning Calm, Colin Lewis
Honors Projects
Whether one is speaking of its progressive elements or its charismatic characteristics, Korean Christianity exhibits a vibrancy that stands out among the religious traditions of modern East Asia. Its evangelistic zeal and enormous growth have led to its being a locus point of Christian faith for those in non-Western contexts. In light of its vibrancy and prominence, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the church in Korea is proof that Christianity may thrive outside of the West.
At the same time, the reasons for Christianity’s success on the Korean peninsula are more difficult to pin down. Why …
The Lord Of The Rings And The Weight Of Two Worlds: An Exploration Of Faith In Fantasy, Danielle Myers
The Lord Of The Rings And The Weight Of Two Worlds: An Exploration Of Faith In Fantasy, Danielle Myers
Honors Projects
This project is two-fold. The first section attempts to determine what it is that makes Tolkien’s writing, specifically within The Lord of the Rings, stand out against other Christian fantasy, particularly within modern evangelical culture. The purpose of this is to determine how he uses faith within his fantasy differently, and makes that faith-based writing meaningful to his readers without leaving them feeling preached-at. The second section is an excerpt of my own novel, The Weight of Two Worlds, in which I have attempted to use Tolkien’s methods to incorporate faith in my fantasy writing.
The Multiethnic Church As A Reflection Of God's Image: A Focus On Reconciliation In A Local Congregation, Jodi C. Gatlin
The Multiethnic Church As A Reflection Of God's Image: A Focus On Reconciliation In A Local Congregation, Jodi C. Gatlin
Seattle Pacific Seminary Projects
This thesis seeks to discover whether or not a focus on reconciliation in a local church can prompt the congregation to engage their multiethnic neighborhood and become a more diverse church. It argues that in the midst of a broken and hurting world the multiethnic congregation offers a reflection of the image of God and a message of hope to the world. Specifically, this project will explore the question, “Can a focus on reconciliation in the local church lead to an increase of social and cultural engagement by its congregants that produces positive change in the surrounding community?” As a …

'To Open Eyes That Are Blind . . . ' [Isa 42:7]: Senses, Idolatry, And Unity In Isaiah, Kelsie Job
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the theme of sense-lessness throughout Isaiah in connection with the sin of idolatry and prophetic expectation that Israel and Judah will one day be reunited. It explores Isaiah's use of a metaphorical trope to communicate the spiritual reality of Israel's insensibility and Isaiah's anticipation of YHWH's restorative action on their behalf. The restoration of Israel's senses portrays Israel's metaphorical features (eyes, ears, hearts) finally fulfilling their proper purpose before God (seeing, hearing, understanding), which are representative of the deeper spiritual reality that they at last will find their proper function as the people of God. Their senses …

Appropriating The Principles Of L'Arche For The Transformation Of Church Curricula, Nathan Goldbloom
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates several of the principles on which L’Arche is based, which are articulated in Jean Vanier’s writings: belonging, vulnerability, peace, spirituality, communion, and celebration. These six principles are analyzed with the objective of ascertaining their relevance for the Church as a whole and how they might be used to enrich and enhance programs of Christian education and spiritual formation in local congregations.
Responses To A Sunday School Curriculum On Mental Illness In The Church, Megan M. Hamshar
Responses To A Sunday School Curriculum On Mental Illness In The Church, Megan M. Hamshar
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores perceptions and attitudes toward mental illness in the church through a literature review of existing research in psychology, supported by a qualitative study of participants in a Sunday School series on mental illness. The four-week course was taught in a class of adults in their twenties and thirties in a Free Methodist church. The results from the study largely support the empirical literature that suggests the church holds primarily negative perceptions and attitudes toward mental illness and the persons it affects. However, the study also suggested that education may encourage self-analysis of negative attitudes and behaviors toward …
