Session Iiia: Religious Studies Presentation 4 - Reading Rahab Through The Lens Of Colonization, Rebecca Majorel Mar 2023

Session Iiia: Religious Studies Presentation 4 - Reading Rahab Through The Lens Of Colonization, Rebecca Majorel

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

In the biblical narrative of Rahab, Rahab is colonized by the existing imperial powers, the patriarchal values of Israel, and the army of Joshua. In this assessment colonization is evaluated on four criteria: the control the colonizer exerts over material, cultural, symbolic, and religious resources of the colonized. Under these qualification, Rahab is a victim of colonization, and therefore, the decisions made by Rahab in the narrative may be read as acts of self-preservation.

Graduate Session: Presentation 3 - Dietrich Bonhoeffer’S Necessary Shattering Of The Wheel, Hannah O'Brien

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

An exploration of Bonhoeffer's theological ethics as it relates to his participation in a resistance conspiracy that aimed to assassinate Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders. Many categorize him as a pacifist, but is this true? I argue that Bonhoeffer's theological reasoning should be viewed in terms of Bonhoeffer's idea of "responsible action." With this in mind, one can assume that in his specific situation Bonhoeffer saw his involvement in this conspiracy as a decision that may not be justified, but necessary.

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 3: An Effort To Harmonize Omniscience And Free Will, Joy Clarisse Saavedra

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

The research in this presentation reflects an approach to finding a resolve to one issue presented by God’s omniscience. God’s omniscience raises the question of how much freedom humans have to make choices if God, who created all things, already knows (in the sense that God determines) the choices that humans have made, are making, and will make. Furthermore, if God’s omniscience determines humans’ choices then God’s omniscience is the cause for everything that happens and, thus, God’s omniscience is the cause for everything that is evil. To the issue that omniscience creates, this presentation examines the compatibilist approaches of …

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 1: What The Theology Of Hebrews Reveals About Authorship, Austin Childress Mar 2019

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 1: What The Theology Of Hebrews Reveals About Authorship, Austin Childress

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

Traditional approaches to studying the authorship of Hebrews have employed many literary methods, but they have notably excluded large-scale theological studies of the ancient book. My hope in this exercise was to survey the theological themes in Hebrews with the hope of coming to a better understanding of who the author mayhave been. The three major theological themes I noticed were Christology, Ecclesiology, and theology of Scripture; inside of each of these branches of Christian theology I found several implications that could provide a clearer understanding of who the author was. My next step was to look behind the …

The Return Of The Prophetic Ministry Of The Western Church Within The Context Of Liberation Theology And The Prophets, Cedric D. Starr May 2016

The Return Of The Prophetic Ministry Of The Western Church Within The Context Of Liberation Theology And The Prophets, Cedric D. Starr

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

While there may still be churches in the West that take up the prophetic call against injustice their voices are the minority. Generally speaking, the prophetic church in Western Christendom is dead. Its prophetic voice has become mute. Its prophetic vision has diminished. Its prophetic call has vanished from the ears of its members. The Western Church has lost its prophetic role in the Global World. The prophets of the West have vanished. However, the prophetic call has been taken up by a new church tradition that rises upward from the ruin of oppression. The Southern Church of the developing …
