In today’s ever-changing healthcare landscape, Catholic U.S. hospitals have undergone a change in their mission and thus their identity. This paper argues that Catholic hospitals need to rediscover the origins of their ministry. This can be accomplished by refocusing their efforts away from mergers with secular entities that deal strictly with life and death issues to mergers that more fully engage the care for the poor and vulnerable. This paper explores how Archbishop Oscar Romero serves as a model for the church today. It examines his efforts to become a voice for the voiceless and to demonstrate how care for the poor lies at the heart of what it means to be a Christian. Ultimately this paper argues that Romero fits the criteria for sainthood because he truly exemplified what it means to be a follower of Christ.
