Now You See It, Now You Don't: Biblical Perspectives On The Relationship Between Magic And Religion, Shawna Dolansky, David A. Allred
Now You See It, Now You Don't: Biblical Perspectives On The Relationship Between Magic And Religion, Shawna Dolansky, David A. Allred
BYU Studies Quarterly
Defining terms is a foundational task in academic studies, and a clear example of its importance is in the ongoing debates on the relationship between magic and religion. Because of the various ways in which magic has been defined over time and because of the negative connotations that can accompany some definitions, explorations of magic and religion are rife with misunderstanding and ethnocentrism, most famously dating back to the milieu of cultural evolution that characterized nineteenth-century anthropology, especially in the works of Edward B. Taylor and James G. Frazer. However, questions about the relationship between magic and religion go back …

Aaron And The Golden Calf In The Rhetoric Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts
Aaron And The Golden Calf In The Rhetoric Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts
Religion - All Scholarship
In the Pentateuch, the contrast between law and narrative, or more precisely, ritual instructions and ritual narrative, is nowhere more stark than in the relationship between the Golden Calf story (Exod 32-34) and the instructions for building the Tabernacle (Exod 25-31, 35-40). The former vilifies Aaron by placing him at the center of the idolatrous event while the latter celebrates Aaron and his sons as divinely consecrated priests. Though source criticism has long since distinguished the authors of these accounts, it does not explain the intentions behind a literary juxtaposition that is too stark to be anything but intentional. Nor …

Criminal And Civil Law In The Torah: The Mosaic Law In Christian Perspective, David A. Skeel Jr., Tremper Longman
Criminal And Civil Law In The Torah: The Mosaic Law In Christian Perspective, David A. Skeel Jr., Tremper Longman
All Faculty Scholarship
When Jesus spoke of fulfilling the law and the prophets, he was referring to the Mosaic law, nearly all of which is in the four books we consider in this Article: Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. In an effort to discern the Mosaic law’s guidance for contemporary secular law, we first place it in covenantal perspective and identify three of its key concerns: God’s nature, as revealed in Scripture; the nature of Israel; and the role of the land. After summarizing the regulation in the four books under consideration and noting a few of its characteristics, we conclude by discussing …
Sensible, Prudent & Shrewd: Building Blocks For A Theology Of Efficiency, Michael E. Cafferky
Sensible, Prudent & Shrewd: Building Blocks For A Theology Of Efficiency, Michael E. Cafferky
Faculty Works
This paper examines operational efficiency from a biblical theology perspective. The paper describes operational efficiency in contemporary terms and considers six categories of constraints on efficiency. In pursuing its purpose the paper reviews six relevant biblical themes including: God‘s character, creation, covenant, shalom, blessing, and fruitfulness. Five biblical values and virtues describe how efficiency is to be achieved: truth, wisdom, prudence, usefulness, and stewardship. The biblical theme of agricultural yield provides an illustration of the instrumental virtues and values by which workers achieve and measure efficiency.

Is The Modern Parachurch A Reflection Of Misguided Ecclesiology?, Joshua A. Haywood
Is The Modern Parachurch A Reflection Of Misguided Ecclesiology?, Joshua A. Haywood
Senior Honors Theses
In light of the present situation of Christianity, it has become necessary to examine the biblical basis for ministries outside the normal parameters of the Church. One of the biggest problems with addressing this issue is that of defining the parachurch. An accurate and sufficient definition for what constitutes a parachurch ministry requires an investigation into biblical ecclesiology. The relationship between parachurch ministries and the local and universal church must be established in a time when the lines between them are blurred. Some basic principles need to be established which describe what constitutes a biblical reason for the creation of …

Lessons From Sodom, Scott Vander Ploeg
Lessons From Sodom, Scott Vander Ploeg
Symposium on Worship Archive
Many in today’s society have only a vague notion of sin and its consequences. Yet, the gospel of Jesus Christ stands out most brilliantly only when understood against the destructive backdrop of human sin. Utilizing the Old Testament story of Lot in Sodom, Scott Vander Ploeg will explore how to effectively communicate the bad news/good news of the gospel in a mission context.
Remembering Our Baptisms, Howard Vanderwell
Remembering Our Baptisms, Howard Vanderwell
Symposium on Worship Archive
Churches and families which practice infant baptism face a significant challenge for the formation of faith. How can a one-time baptism of long ago continue to be a shaping influence in the lives of children and youth? How can we be sure that it won’t be “long forgotten”? We’ll examine the role of parents in keeping the idea of baptism alive. We’ll also share our best practices as congregations in liturgical actions that effectively remember baptism.

Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone
Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone
The Asbury Journal
This essay explores the role of biblical exegesis in the task of Christian theology and in the contemporary global mission of the church from the perspective of an Old Testament scholar. It poses the question what a biblical exegesis would look like that was consistently Christian in its assumptions while, at the same time, honest and competent in dealing with the phenomena of the biblical text. Using the exegesis of the early centuries of the church as a case study, the essay develops insights into the role of serious biblical study in empowering the early church's vibrant expansion through the …
God And Sex: What The Bible Really Says, Michael Coogan, Eric A. Eliason
God And Sex: What The Bible Really Says, Michael Coogan, Eric A. Eliason
BYU Studies Quarterly
Once, while serving as a military chaplain, I attended a training event in Colorado Springs. There we toured the world headquarters of the Evangelical "Focus on the Family" ministry. Our friendly guide explained to us that their organization existed to promote the "biblical model" of the family in the modern world. A cheeky question popped into to my mind: "By 'biblical model' do you mean the polygamy practiced in the Old Testament, or the celibacy encouraged in the New Testament?" But I held my tongue, as I wanted to be a polite guest. But since this event, I have often …
