Effective Leadership In Small Group Ministry Through The Application Of Family Systems, James Knill Dec 1994

Effective Leadership In Small Group Ministry Through The Application Of Family Systems, James Knill

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The premise of this project is that small group leaders can become more effective and caring through the application of family systems theory, specifically Bowenian theory, to the leadership process. The author developed a four-part training manual that provides a general orientation to family systems thinking for group leaders, with a specific focus on self-differentiation, homeostasis or balance, and emotional triangles. All leaders indicated improved ability to work with groups and in other settings as self-differentiated persons, though some wanted to understand the concepts more completely. All felt they were more effective leaders following the training process.

Internal And External Factors That Hinder Or Help Effective Ministry To Divorced Lutherans: Why They Stay Away/What We Can Do To Bring Them In", Paul Peckman Dec 1994

Internal And External Factors That Hinder Or Help Effective Ministry To Divorced Lutherans: Why They Stay Away/What We Can Do To Bring Them In", Paul Peckman

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors that hinder or help ministry to divorced people.

Questionnaires to divorced members and pastors, addressing attitudes and perceptions, were the chief tools. Suggestions were solicited to ascertain what promotes meaningful ministry.

Perceptions of pastors and divorced members are often different. The divorced have more intense feelings about the issues and are more lenient in their understanding of grounds for divorce than pastors. Pastors are more inclined to credit internal factors, the divorced external, for what hinders effective ministry.

Pastors need to be more understanding of the dynamics of the divorce …

Open Homes And Fictive Kin Groups: Jesus Reinvents The Family, Reta Halteman Finger

Biblical, Religious, & Philosophical Studies Educator Scholarship

In the early 1970s, a group of six evangelical women in Chicago began meeting. Their topic of conversation? The emerging secular movement of feminism and what it might mean in a Christian context. These discussions would eventually lead to the Daughters of Sarah, a mid-20th century American journal for the particular audience of Christian feminists. Daughters of Sarah published some of the earliest religious scholarship on the topic.

An Analysis Of The Literary Structure Of The Book Of Revelation According To Textlinguistic Methods, Steven L. Waechter

Faculty Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to apply discourse analysis (textlinguistics) to the Book of Revelation. This research has two outcomes. It adds to the body of literature validating discourse analysis as a viable and useful tool for biblical studies. It also suggests a literary framework for the Book of Revelation, with particular attention to discourse segmentation and peak. The procedure used in this dissertation has five steps. First, notional type is evaluated on the basis of speech-act theory and a combination of contingent temporal succession and agent orientation. Second, the surface text is analyzed for recurring semantic domains, verb …

The Religious Dimensions Of The Biological Narrative, Ursula W. Goodenough Dec 1994

The Religious Dimensions Of The Biological Narrative, Ursula W. Goodenough

Biology Faculty Publications & Presentations

A cell/molecular biologist challenges the thesis that science and religion are two ways of experiencing and interpreting the world and explores instead the possible ways that the modern biological worldview might serve as a resource for religious perspectives. Three concepts—meaning, valuation, and purpose—are argued to be central to the entire biological enterprise, and the continuation of this enterprise is regarded as a sacred religious trust.

This article was originally delivered at the Templeton Symposium,„Science and Religion: Two Ways of Experiencing and Interpreting the World”organized by Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science and the Chicago Center for Religion and Science, 31 …
