Pope Francis, Human Rights, And The Crises Of Our Time, John Sniegocki Oct 2019

Pope Francis, Human Rights, And The Crises Of Our Time, John Sniegocki

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

My paper/presentation will explore the holistic understanding of human rights contained in Catholic social teaching, with a focus on how Pope Francis applies this tradition to some of the major crises of our time. Particular attention will be given to issues of economic inequality, ecological devastation, migration, violence, and the rise of neo-fascist populist movements around the world. Francis’ integrated analysis of the common roots of these problems and his proposed constructive responses will be explored and assessed. Strong emphasis will be placed upon his understanding of the critical role to be played by grassroots movements and widespread popular mobilization.

Memoria Y Resistencia: Sharing Ud Experiences At The Encuentro To Close The School Of The Americas, Mary Niebler, Christina Baker

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

At UD, our Catholic and Marianist values inform us to uphold the human rights of all people, especially those whose agency has been diminished by unjust laws and corporate government policies. Guided by the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, including solidarity with the poor, we seek ways to join together to bring about a more peaceful and just world. The annual SOA Watch Encuentro, a peaceful protest to close the School of the Americas (SOA), is such a movement.

Established in 1946, the SOA has operated at Fort Benning, Georgia since the 1980s. Technically closed in 2000, it immediately reopened …

The Right To Religious Freedom And Its Political Significance: Catholic And Islamic Approaches, Matthew Bagot Oct 2019

The Right To Religious Freedom And Its Political Significance: Catholic And Islamic Approaches, Matthew Bagot

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

It is generally agreed that the Catholic Church formally committed itself to modern human rights in 1963 as a result of Pope John XXIII’s encyclical, Pacem in Terris. But it was the more specific historical development regarding the right to religious freedom that took place two years later at the Second Vatican Council, which really prompted global change. As Samuel Huntington wrote, the Church’s commitment to religious liberty on the part of all persons (and to the liberty of non-religious persons) had an extraordinary impact on democracy movements around the world. Indeed, Huntington referred to these movements as a “Catholic …

Partnering With Faith Communities: Challenges Of Religious And Secular Literacy, Rob Brodrick, Kelly S. Johnson, Anwar Khan, Leocadie Lushombo, Edith Tapia Oct 2019

Partnering With Faith Communities: Challenges Of Religious And Secular Literacy, Rob Brodrick, Kelly S. Johnson, Anwar Khan, Leocadie Lushombo, Edith Tapia

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Partnering with Faith Communities: Challenges of Religious and Secular Literacy

While many scholars have noted the necessity of a grasp of the complexity of religious belief for engagement in international relations, human rights, and humanitarian work, the topic of religious belief remains fraught and underdeveloped in human rights activism. Concerns include the conviction that religion must be treated as private in order to preserve an inclusive public life; evidence that religious communities may oppose the human rights' groups commitments on LGBTQI and women's rights; and anxieties that various religious groups will exclude or manipulate those who are not members and …

Retelling The Classics: The Harlem Renaissance, Biblical Stories, And Black Peoplehood, Mina Magalhaes Jun 2019

Retelling The Classics: The Harlem Renaissance, Biblical Stories, And Black Peoplehood, Mina Magalhaes

Celebration of Learning

Applying social identity theory to the process of creating peoplehood can illustrate the positive power that literature has in uplifting marginalized communities by showing their worth. James Weldon Johnson’s “The Creation” and Zora Neale Hurston’s Moses, Man of the Mountain, both composed during the Harlem Renaissance, offer one way to create Black peoplehood by creating depictions of God’s love for His Black people through the repurposing of biblical stories. Through the implementation of social identity theory to Hurston’s Moses, Man of the Mountain and Johnson’s “The Creation,” I argue that these two authors addressed the need among African Americans to …

Martin Luther King Jr.: The Ideal Medieval Preacher, Chloe Diaz May 2019

Martin Luther King Jr.: The Ideal Medieval Preacher, Chloe Diaz

Andrews Research Conference

When scholars interpret the sermons of Martin Luther King Jr., such as his last sermon, they investigate his delivery of the speech and how it has stood the test of time. A common example is “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop,” which King delivered on the eve of his death. Many say that he delivered this sermon like it was his last one—as if he were fully aware. Because of scholarship, this sermons has survived, but there is a lens that has not been explored extensively—the influence of medieval rhetorical theory on his scholarship as a theologian. There is a common …

From Bird-Woman To Mermaid: The Shifting Image Of The Medieval Siren, Claire Cannell May 2019

From Bird-Woman To Mermaid: The Shifting Image Of The Medieval Siren, Claire Cannell

Student Research Symposium

During the Middle Ages, the siren transforms from its classical status as grotesque bird-woman into an alluring mermaid. A female monster, the siren represents what is considered monstrous in women. I plan to examine the unstable image of the siren in order to better understand the religious and social status of the medieval European woman. The siren is contextualized among contemporary secular images of female sexuality and the writings of religious authorities such as Leander of Seville, who wrote that all women were either nuns or sirens. I plan to analyze the implications of the nun-siren binary created by Leander …

The Impact India’S Socio-Cultural Environment Has On Its Residents Perceptions On Homosexuality., Harpreet Manko

STEM Student Research Symposium Posters

While homosexuality exists in all civilizations of life and has been seen in various perspectives by all peoples, it is often seen as a taboo subject matter. Especially when considering the more religious, rather heteronormative environment that is seen in Indian communities. With my research, it is with this research that one will hope to learn what it is about India's socio-cultural environment that puts homosexuality in such a negative light.

Chinese Arts: Visualizing The World Through The Taoist Eye, Harrison Nickels Apr 2019

Chinese Arts: Visualizing The World Through The Taoist Eye, Harrison Nickels

Student Symposium

Over the centuries of Chinese tradition, abundant art works were created as expressions of people’s views of life and as indications of the way they observed and understood the natural and human world around them. These works, therefore, are of grand importance for scholars today to glean information on the social, cultural, political, and economic environments of the time. Among the schools of the arts, quite a few had been under the influence of the Taoist philosophy. Specifically, the Taoist inherent concern with the passivity of life found its way in the works of artists, which, in a variety of …

History, Security, And Peace: A Comparison Of Sectarian Conflicts In Northern Ireland And The Middle East, Ahmed I. Hamed, Noah Chamberlain Spicer Apr 2019

History, Security, And Peace: A Comparison Of Sectarian Conflicts In Northern Ireland And The Middle East, Ahmed I. Hamed, Noah Chamberlain Spicer

Student Symposium

“The Troubles,” a violent conflict that began in Northern Ireland in 1968 and lasted until the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, saw high levels of violence and terrorism on both sides--Protestants and Catholics--of the socio-political conflict. While major issues of violence were addressed by the Good Friday Agreement, many key ontological issues remain very much alive and active, resulting in “peace walls” which separate Catholic and Protestant neighborhoods in Northern Ireland. The impediments to peace stem not just from these issues of violence, but also from the minimal attention paid to ontological security in peace negotiations: the security of oneself, …

‘No Longer Will You Call Me Ba’Al’- An Analysis Of The Prevailing Interpretive Model In The Scholarship Of Hosea And Counter-Proposal, John Mathy Apr 2019

‘No Longer Will You Call Me Ba’Al’- An Analysis Of The Prevailing Interpretive Model In The Scholarship Of Hosea And Counter-Proposal, John Mathy

Scholar Week 2016 - present

The majority of scholars assume that the book of Hosea was written against the backdrop of syncretistic Ba’al worship in the Northern Kingdom during the 8th century BC. This paper takes a critical look at the lack of evidence for this interpretation and proposes an alternative reading of the text. By systematically examining each use of the word ‘ba’al’ in the text of Hosea, this paper proposes that the primary polemic of the prophet is not aimed at Ba’al worship, but rather at a distorted nationalistic version of Yahweh worship, focused around the golden calves of Jeroboam I.

From Chod To Feeding Your Demons: A Western Approach To Tibetan Tantra, Tanner Mcalister

Student Research Symposium

"From Chod to Feeding Your Demons: A Western Adaptation of Tibetan Tantra Tanner McAlister and Dr. Dominic Sur (Mentor), Religious Studies. This research examines how Chod, a tantric Buddhist ritual traced to eleventh-century Tibet, has been altered in the West by Buddhist teacher, Lama Tsultrim Allione. The analysis aims to uncover whether the soteriological dimension of Chod has been altered from buddhahood to psychological well-being. Chod's transmission to the West and its scope as a non-traditional practice is a recent phenomenon tracing back to just the last decade of the twentieth century. Although publications on Chod as practiced in Tibet …

"I Don't Want To Have A Weird Relationship With You, So I'M Trying": Relational Turning Points And Trajectories Of Ex-Lds Children And Their Active Lds Parents, Jared Worwood

Student Research Symposium

The doctrine and practices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (also known as the LDS or Mormon Church) require high levels of commitment and involvement. As a result, like many high-cost religions, not only does the LDS church influence the identities of its members, but it is also extensively integrated into the everyday life of LDS families (Scheitle & Adamczyk, 2010; Loser, Klein, Hill, & Dollahite, 2008; Airhart & Bendroth, 1996). Besides being instructed that it is their divine mandate to teach their children the gospel of the church (Nelson, 2001; Viñas, 2010), LDS parents are also …

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 3: An Effort To Harmonize Omniscience And Free Will, Joy Clarisse Saavedra Mar 2019

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 3: An Effort To Harmonize Omniscience And Free Will, Joy Clarisse Saavedra

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

The research in this presentation reflects an approach to finding a resolve to one issue presented by God’s omniscience. God’s omniscience raises the question of how much freedom humans have to make choices if God, who created all things, already knows (in the sense that God determines) the choices that humans have made, are making, and will make. Furthermore, if God’s omniscience determines humans’ choices then God’s omniscience is the cause for everything that happens and, thus, God’s omniscience is the cause for everything that is evil. To the issue that omniscience creates, this presentation examines the compatibilist approaches of …

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 1: What The Theology Of Hebrews Reveals About Authorship, Austin Childress Mar 2019

I A Religion And Philosophy Presentation 1: What The Theology Of Hebrews Reveals About Authorship, Austin Childress

Life of the Scholar Multidisciplinary Conference

Traditional approaches to studying the authorship of Hebrews have employed many literary methods, but they have notably excluded large-scale theological studies of the ancient book. My hope in this exercise was to survey the theological themes in Hebrews with the hope of coming to a better understanding of who the author mayhave been. The three major theological themes I noticed were Christology, Ecclesiology, and theology of Scripture; inside of each of these branches of Christian theology I found several implications that could provide a clearer understanding of who the author was. My next step was to look behind the …
