The purpose of this study will be to make an accurate descriptive account of past journalistic endeavors in Emery County with special emphasis placed on the characteristics of the publications. The study will attempt to illustrate the characteristics and tone of each editor's or publisher's product. Available biographical material and characteristics of publishers and editors will be listed where possible. Factors which led to launching and/or discontinuation of publication, economic factors, and special problems will be discussed where material is available to accurately do so. This study is a geographical description of a specific area at a particular point in history. The year 1869 was chosen for the study of the Wasatch Front because it is a datum point; something to work from. Following the completion of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory, Utah, on May 10, 1869, the typically Mormon society at the Wasatch Front oasis began to be more rapidly integrated to the cultural and economic influences from the East. The Influence Of The Southern Nevada And Southern Utah Folklore Upon The Writings Of Dr. Juanita Brooks And Dr. Leroy R. Hafen, Pansy L. Hardy

Since no writing is entirely objective, it is the contention of this thesis that Dr. Juanita Brooks and Dr. LeRoy R. Hafen, the most authoritative writers of the Southern Nevada and Southern Utah region, were greatly influenced in their writings by the folklore of the region and of the people. The two aspects of folklore which are most prominent in their writings are, first, those which treat the supernatural aspect of divine intervention, and, second, those which surround the struggle for survival.
