Thomas Armitage (1819-1896) was a Baptist pastor, author, and leader who ministered to a single congregation—New York City’s Fifth Avenue Baptist Church—for forty years. Despite his accomplishments, he has largely been forgotten other than being noted as the author of A History of the Baptists. In addition to serving faithfully in the pastorate, he played a significant role as a leader in the American Bible Union. The following are three more specific definitions: (1) In semantics and discourse analysis: A generalization of the concept of conversation to all modalities and contexts. (2) "The totality of codified linguistic usages attached to a given type of social practice. (E.g.: legal discourse, medical discourse, religious discourse.)" (3) In the work of Michel Foucault, and social theorists inspired by him: "an entity of sequences of signs in that they are enouncements (enoncés)" (Foucault 1969: 141). When Sarah Palin used the term “blood libel” in response to the shooting in Arizona that left six people dead and severely injured others, including Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords, she stirred a controversy. Charles Gore, Bishop of Oxford, co-author of "Lux Mundi" and leading liberal Anglo-Catholic of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, was an early exponent of the rights of labor, and advocate for collective bargaining. This Article examines the theological underpinnings of this advocacy, finding it inextricably rooted in Gore's vision of Christianity as "the Way" fundamentally a way of life, and not a series of doctrinal commitments.
