Criminal And Civil Law In The Torah: The Mosaic Law In Christian Perspective, David A. Skeel Jr., Tremper Longman Jun 2011

Criminal And Civil Law In The Torah: The Mosaic Law In Christian Perspective, David A. Skeel Jr., Tremper Longman

All Faculty Scholarship

When Jesus spoke of fulfilling the law and the prophets, he was referring to the Mosaic law, nearly all of which is in the four books we consider in this Article: Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. In an effort to discern the Mosaic law’s guidance for contemporary secular law, we first place it in covenantal perspective and identify three of its key concerns: God’s nature, as revealed in Scripture; the nature of Israel; and the role of the land. After summarizing the regulation in the four books under consideration and noting a few of its characteristics, we conclude by discussing …

Remembering Our Baptisms, Howard Vanderwell Jan 2011

Remembering Our Baptisms, Howard Vanderwell

Symposium on Worship Archive

Churches and families which practice infant baptism face a significant challenge for the formation of faith. How can a one-time baptism of long ago continue to be a shaping influence in the lives of children and youth? How can we be sure that it won’t be “long forgotten”? We’ll examine the role of parents in keeping the idea of baptism alive. We’ll also share our best practices as congregations in liturgical actions that effectively remember baptism.

Lessons From Sodom, Scott Vander Ploeg Jan 2011

Lessons From Sodom, Scott Vander Ploeg

Symposium on Worship Archive

Many in today’s society have only a vague notion of sin and its consequences. Yet, the gospel of Jesus Christ stands out most brilliantly only when understood against the destructive backdrop of human sin. Utilizing the Old Testament story of Lot in Sodom, Scott Vander Ploeg will explore how to effectively communicate the bad news/good news of the gospel in a mission context.

Know Truth, Believe Truth, Live Truth: How Walking With Jesus Should Change Your World, Casie R. Neal

Honors Theses

Hi! I'm so glad you decided to pick up this study. Welcome to a project that is a result of several years of work, thought and experience. It has been put together for you with lots of love, and I hope you benefit from reading through it. I designed it for my honor's thesis project as a part of my graduation requirements. I chose it because I wanted to share some of the things God has taught me through walking with Him. When I was little, I always wanted to be a writer, and I guess this was my chance. …

Modern English Bible Translations, Gaye Strathearn Jan 2011

Modern English Bible Translations, Gaye Strathearn

Faculty Publications

The work of translation from one language to another is always fraught with difficulties—philological, contextual, and even procedural difficulties. If a word has numerous meanings, as most do, how does the translator decide which one to use? Should the translation reflect a wordfor- word translation (i.e., formal equivalence), or should it reflect the idiomatic language of the receptor language (i.e., functional/dynamic equivalence)? The major benefit of a formal-equivalence approach is that the translation maintains a feel for the language and format of the original text. The construction of Hebrew and Greek words and sentences is maintained, as much as possible, …
