Book Review: The Rivers Of Paradise: Moses, Buddha, Confucius, Jesus, And Muhammad As Religious Founders, David Freedman, Michael Mcclymond, Deborah Sommer Apr 2014

Book Review: The Rivers Of Paradise: Moses, Buddha, Confucius, Jesus, And Muhammad As Religious Founders, David Freedman, Michael Mcclymond, Deborah Sommer

Deborah A. Sommer

In his introduction to Rivers of Paradise, David Noel Freedman explains how the book finds a guiding metaphor in a passage from Genesis (2:10–14) that relates how a river emerges from Eden and splits into four different rivers that flow to different parts of the world. He associates these five rivers with five “great personality religions of the world,” which are traditions “originating in and centering around the person, the life and experience, of a single individual—as it happens all of them men” (p. 2). These “founding fathers” are Moses, the Buddha, Confucius, Jesus, and Muhammad, in that order; …

God Is His Own Interpreter, And He Will Make It Plain, Barry D. Fike Dec 2013

God Is His Own Interpreter, And He Will Make It Plain, Barry D. Fike

Barry D. Fike

Religion, in its mystical, emotional or practical expression is, to me at any rate, of little value if divorced from intellectual integrity. I think that the reason “many believers” are so repulsive is that they don’t really have faith but a kind of false security. They operate by the slide rule, and the Church for them is not the body of Christ but the poor man’s insurance system. It’s never hard for them to believe because actually they never think about it. Unfortunately the reality is simply that it is not easy to get vast masses of men to think …

He Shall Be Called A Nazorean: Intertextuality Without An Intertext?, James F. Mcgrath Sep 2013

He Shall Be Called A Nazorean: Intertextuality Without An Intertext?, James F. Mcgrath

James F. McGrath

Inexact quotations are a common phenomenon in Biblical intertextuality, and some suspected allusions are so fleeting and/or imprecise as to leave interpreters wondering whether an allusion was intended or not. But in at least one instance, Matthew 2:23, we have a reference to something unspecified prophets are supposed to have said, namely that “He shall be called a Nazorean,” which may not in fact have any intertext at all.

Resurrection Of The Flesh Or Resurrection From The Dead: Implications For Theology., Brian Schmisek Dec 2012

Resurrection Of The Flesh Or Resurrection From The Dead: Implications For Theology., Brian Schmisek

Brian Schmisek

What will our resurrected bodies look like? Will we be young or old? Marked by the physical imperfections of our earthly lives? Does this flesh we carry now rise or is it something other? What does our modern knowledge of the world contribute to our understanding? Brian Schmisek traces developments in the Christian understanding of resurrection, explores the topic in light of biblical data, and mines scientific insights. What results is a synthesis that expresses the essence of the apostolic kerygma in modern terms. Schmisek's impressive combination of solid theological and biblical scholarship with an accessible and welcoming style makes …

Logos And Law In The Letter Of James : The Law Of Nature, The Law Of Moses, And The Law Of Freedom, Matt Jackson-Mccabe Oct 2012

Logos And Law In The Letter Of James : The Law Of Nature, The Law Of Moses, And The Law Of Freedom, Matt Jackson-Mccabe

Matt Jackson-McCabe

This study examines the association of "implanted logos" and the "perfect law of freedom" in the Letter of James. It argues that James understands the Torah to be a written expression of the divine law the Stoics correlated with human reason. After showing how past interpretation of James's logos has been guided by a problematic essentialist approach to Christian origins, the Stoic theory of law is reconstructed with special attention to Cicero's concept of "implanted reason." Adaptations of the Stoic theory in ancient Jewish and Christian literature are examined, and the Letter of James is analyzed in detail. The work …

Jewish Christianity Reconsidered : Rethinking Ancient Groups And Texts, Matt Jackson-Mccabe Oct 2012

Jewish Christianity Reconsidered : Rethinking Ancient Groups And Texts, Matt Jackson-Mccabe

Matt Jackson-McCabe

For decades, scholars have used the phrase "Jewish Christianity" and, more recently, "Christian Judaism." But just what do those terms mean? Who were the first Jewish Christians? What counts as Jewish Christianity? Those questions receive current and definitive treatment in essays drawn together by Matt Jackson- McCabe, founder of the consultation on Jewish Christianity at the Society of Biblical Literature.

Spiritual Inhabitation In The Gospel Of Mark: A Reconsideration Of Mark 8:33, Kevin Sullivan Nov 2010

Spiritual Inhabitation In The Gospel Of Mark: A Reconsideration Of Mark 8:33, Kevin Sullivan

Kevin P. Sullivan

The article presents the author's view on a subject pertaining to the gospel of Saint Mark particularly the sayings verbalized by Jesus Christ who regarded Peter as "Satan." He argued that the sayings contained in the gospel signify that Mark is trying to convey that Peter was spiritually inhabited by Satan. The author also reveals that Jesus has seen Satan within Peter, and that he was trying to get rid of him. He also offered various interpretations of scholars regarding the passage. Some scholars interpreted it metaphorically, arguing that only the behavior of Peter resembles that of Satan.
