Writing An Authoring Call Program, Phan Banpho

Authoring programs are very useful because they offer language teachers and those involved in language teaching a convenient means of constructing exercises and tests. This article encourages language teachers who have some experience in programming to write an authoring program. It discusses important components of the authoring module, particularly the input, editing, data and information saving. This article also covers practical steps and techniques, including how to retrieve the data input by the teacher and how to mark students' answers.

From Insult And Injury To Open Critical Thinking, John Wilson

In this article the author outlines the conflict existing between the western heritage of open critical thinking and traditional Thai values. It is maintained that the issue of voicing critical thinking in Thai universities is not principally an intellectual dilemma, but rather a social one. He proposes that this problem is not insoluble and that revising local concepts of "argument" and other expository speech acts in the academic language game will promise an intellectually powerful yet socially harmonious outcome. He formulates an adoptable principle of intellectual integrity with maxims for academic debate.

Rules of speaking are complex and often differ from language to language Native speakers of a language only acquire proficiency in their use after years of socialisation in the language environment. For foreign learners of that language to be equally adept they would generally need to have extensive knowledge of the language and the target culture allied to years of experience within it. This article examines the notions of "negative" and "positive politeness" and "face" as they relate to the second language classroom. The thesis is that an analysis of these pragmatic aspects of language usage will broaden understanding of the nature of interactions between teachers and students, and will provide insights that may help the teacher with various aspects of classroom methodology. Language affects the way we view the world. As we humans strive to undo the destruction we daily deliver on the environment, we must consider the role that language plays in shaping our views of the environment. This article explores the link between language and the environment, looking at the specific case of English. Both lexical and grammatical features of English are considered. Research has shown that the more active parents are in their child's education the more likely their child is to achieve academic success. Based on these findings this research project focused on how parent volunteers influenced their child's literacy growth. It is hypothesized that as the parent spends time in the classroom they are given more opportunities to interact with other members of the classroom community. It is believed that this interaction will influence the way in which the parent works with their child and have a positive influence on their child's literacy growth.

Students achieve knowledge by different means. I find that a child allowed to learn from one's personal style finds purpose in learning and develops a desire to read. Placing The Places In Wordsworth's 1802 Sonnets, Stephen C. Behrendt

Wordsworth's political sonnets of summer and fall 1802 recount the sights and sounds the poet encountered during the brief respite provided by the Peace of Amiens, which enabled him to return to France and to the woman and child who were the physical reminders of the time he had spent there ten years earlier in the spirited days following the French Revolution. Published together in 1807 in Poems, in Two Volumes, they juxtapose the dispirited and pathetic state of France in 1802 with the ebullience Wordsworth recalled from that earlier time. This study provides an investigation of the occurrences of the designation "Israel," the related names "Judah," "Jacob," "Joseph," "Isaac," "David," "Ephraim," and their combinations in the books of Amos and Hosea in order to find out their referents and the reasons for their usages. Chapter 1 provides a statement of the problem, pointing out the considerable divergence of opinions regarding the etymology, origin, and usage of the designation "Israel." Extract:  When learners start a target language (TL) course, they are normally ".....quite unprepared for the challenge of a foreign language situation, full of self-doubt.." (Dougill 1987: 146). They feel a sense of unease and uncertainty as they wrestle with the new sounds and structures. They find it difficult to convey messages in the same spontaneous fashion that they can in their own languages. As they stutter and stammer in the foreign language (FL), it is natural for them to experience a sense of failure, thus resulting in a loss of confidence.
