The purpose of this study was to analyze the experiences of African American female community college students who stop out, and interpret how their gender and race have influenced these lived experiences. Based on the research questions, a constructivist, narrative analysis was used to capture the experiences of the participants of this study as well as analyze the environment of their personal lives as the institution in which they have all attended.

This study uses feminist life-history narrative methodology to explore the experiences of three African women, who have pursued or are pursuing higher education in the United States, leaving their families in Africa. Contextualized within the socio-historical cultural, colonial, and post-colonial discourses on domesticity and education, this study not only illuminates the pain, ambivalence and struggles women experienced in pursuit of higher education, but also reveals the tension between domesticity and education and how this tension inhibits African women's access to education. Eleanor's story is oral history biographical narrative research about the remarkable life of an 81-year old African American woman who was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. The study is rich with primary document artifacts from Eleanor Rebecca Powell Archer's personal collection. Primary documents are interspersed within the chapters and in three galleries. Much of what is known about informal social support and functional/interactional needs of the elderly comes from studies done on white middle-class populations. The purpose of this research study was to identify the primary groups that noninstitutionalized, black elderly living in federally subsidized age-homogenous residential apartments located in Detroit, Michigan perceived as being instrumental components in their informal social support system.
