Will The Real Mariah Watkins Please Stand Up?: A Case Of Inaccuracy And Marginalization Of African American History And Appearance, Jennifer Farley Gordon, Eulanda A. Sanders

International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference Proceedings

Who was Mariah Watkins? What was her identity, and how did appearance inform that identity? Watkins was an African American woman. Although likely born a slave, she lived most of her free years as a woman of property and of skill, working as a documented nurse and midwife in Neosho, Missouri. This paper relies on archival records, photographic analysis, and material culture to explore Watkins as a case study in the challenges of documenting African American appearance during and after the antebellum period in the United States.

Using a case study approach, the authors o f this article strive to explore the challenges and adverse impact that faculty o f color often experience due to structural inequities, institutional racism, and the lack o f cultural awareness on the part o f White institutions. Independent Study: How Three Doctoral Students Tackled Issues Recruiting Participants And Collecting Data With Historically Underrepresented Populations, Mitsu Narui, Kimberly A. Truong, Tryan L. Mcmickens

Studying historically underrepresented populations can be challenging, especially for doctoral students or early career scholars, who have often been taught more "traditional" research methods. In this article, we outline challenges that we faced when conducting qualitative research on three different historically underrepresented populations, i.e., Asian/American gay, lesbian, bisexual students, doctoral students of color, and Black students at HBCUs, and how we addressed those challenges in order to complete our respective research studies. This study used a qualitative approach to explore the impact of diversity on television through Black viewers' responses to newscasters of different races. The goal was to explore 1) the impact of a newscaster's race on his or her perceived credibility, 2) the perceived accuracy of news reports of racially driven stories, and 3) emotional responses provoked by the race of a newscaster. Scholarship of the civil rights movement developed academically constructed categories, creating binary understandings of the movement that did not capture the true nuance and complexity of specific circumstances. Music offers a lens through which to view the movement holistically, breaking down the essentialist binary interpretations through postmodern analysis of lyrics and music in its historical context. This work applies that approach to the music of Stax Records in the context of the civil rights movement in Memphis, Tennessee.

The purpose of the study was to explore how African American mothers socialize their daughters’ dress and consumption of appearance-related products. This study provides critical insights into how African American mothers serve as purposeful role models and how they employ teaching strategies to cultivate their daughters’ learning about being a Black female in America. Black feminist, Afrocentric, and standpoint theories guided the study to demonstrate how African American mothers are key agents in shaping their daughters development of understanding of social marginalization and how to deal with marginalization through self-presentation.

The main purpose of this dissertation was to assess the psychosocial resources and their effect on developmental health outcomes in African-American older adults in their 60s, 80s, and 100s. One framework that was helpful in understanding the outcomes of aging African Americans was Hobfall's conservation of resources model (Hobfall, 1989). Three studies are presented and discussed using data from the Georgia Centenarian Study. The first study investigated the type and level of resources older African Americans report.
