History Of Agriculture In The United States, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg Aug 2018

History Of Agriculture In The United States, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg

History Publications

Agriculture is at the very center of the human enterprise; its trappings are in evidence all around, yet the agricultural past is an exceptionally distant place from modern America. While the majority of Americans once raised a significant portion of their own food, that ceased to be the case at the beginning of the 20th century. Only a very small portion of the American population today has a personal connection to agriculture. People still must eat, but the process by which food arrives on their plates is less evident than ever. The evolution of that process, with all of its ...

The purpose of this study was to explore Black high school girls’ experiences in a predominately urban public school in the Midwest. This study is guided by the following research question: In what way do gender and racial bias contribute to the self-perception of African American adolescent girls? Anna Julia Cooper: A Quintessential Leader, Janice Y. Ferguson Jan 2015

Anna Julia Cooper: A Quintessential Leader, Janice Y. Ferguson

Dissertations & Theses

This study is a leadership biography which provides, through the lens of Black feminist thought, an alternative view and understanding of the leadership of Black women. Specifically, this analysis highlights ways in which Black women, frequently not identified by the dominant society as leaders, have and can become leaders. Lessons are drawn from the life of Anna Julia Cooper that provides new insights in leadership that heretofore were not evident. Additionally, this research offers provocative recommendations that provide a different perspective of what leadership is among Black women and how that kind of leadership can inform the canon of leadership ...

"Spectacular Opacities": The Hyers Sisters' Performances Of Respectability And Resistance, Jocelyn Buckner Jan 2012

"Spectacular Opacities": The Hyers Sisters' Performances Of Respectability And Resistance, Jocelyn Buckner

Theatre Faculty Articles and Research

This essay analyzes the Hyers Sisters, a Reconstruction-era African American sister act, and their radical efforts to transcend social limits of gender, class, and race in their early concert careers and three major productions, Out of Bondage and Peculiar Sam, or The Underground Railroad, two slavery-to-freedom epics, and Urlina, the African Princess, the first known African American play set in Africa. At a time when serious, realistic roles and romantic plotlines featuring black actors were nearly nonexistent due to the country’s appetite for stereotypical caricatures, the Hyers Sisters used gender passing to perform opposite one another as heterosexual lovers ...

Growing Up African-American, Christian, And Female: The Dichotomies Of My Life, Kemba Gray Jan 2005

Growing Up African-American, Christian, And Female: The Dichotomies Of My Life, Kemba Gray

Human Architecture: Journal of the Sociology of Self-Knowledge

In this paper I explore the roller coaster ride that has been my life. This was not a roller coaster ride that left me dizzy and sick to my stomach, it has done something quite different. The ride has left me clear-headed and stronger in terms of the way I look at the world and how I fit into it. Living with dichotomies for most of my life has created in me a character that is unique, and therefore I am eager to share it. I have always looked at myself as a Zebra, an animal that lives in constant ...

Bigger Than A Ballot Box, Joanne Goodwin Apr 1999

Bigger Than A Ballot Box, Joanne Goodwin

History Faculty Publications

The relationship between the histories of woman suffrage and U.S. politics suffered from a reluctance on the part of both fields to include the other until recently. Political historians refrained from in-depth discussions of the eighty-year movement to gain the vote for women until the new political history expanded the definition of political actors and activities. Women's historians (with a few notable exceptions) discussed the suffrage movement as a type of voluntarist reform activity, rather than contextualizing it within political institutions and systems. Ellen Carol DuBois's study of suffrage through the passage of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth ...
