The Freedom Handbook, Sydney Oshuna-Williams
Senior Projects Fall 2023
"The Freedom Handbook." This autobiographical exploration is not only a personal endeavor but a response to the critical framework presented by Frank Wilderson in his book, “AfroPessimism”. For those unfamiliar with AfroPessimism as a theory, it ultimately positions Black people as socially dead, prompting me to challenge the conventional understanding of it solely as a critical theory. If we accept the claims that human life hinges on the complete objectification of a distinct people, the implications extend far beyond the realm of theory, urging us to confront the very essence of freedom itself. As you embark on this journey with …

Investigating Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations, Anna Hallett Gutierrez
Senior Projects Spring 2020
This project is an exploration of Wittgenstein’s concepts of seeing and ‘seeing as’ and how they can be translated to deal with heard perceptions; hearing and ‘hearing as.’ Roger Scruton’s work with ‘hearing as’ is discussed, and a more complete picture is found of what this translation from seeing to hearing and ‘seeing as’ to ‘hearing as’ means for our larger conception of all sighted and heard perceptions.

Problems With Using Statistics To Justify Institutional Policies, Justin Shin
Problems With Using Statistics To Justify Institutional Policies, Justin Shin
Senior Projects Spring 2017
It is becoming increasingly common for institutions to use statistics to inform policy decisions. We should be prepared to ask ourselves what regulatory principles should be imposed on institutions that seek to justify certain policies through deference to a statistical analysis. This paper will examine the difficulties that come with using statistics to justify actions, and argue that certain standards of transparency and verifiability should be expected from any institution that seeks to involve a statistical analysis in the formation of policies. I will first use Market Share Liability, an established use of statistics, to draw out what responsibilities an …

If I asked you what was your favorite book? Who was your favorite actor? Or which candy did you like the most? You would answer; furthermore support your response with reason. That reason would be the philosophical aspect of your response. However, even if I, also with reason, refuted your argument, there’d still be this spark of ‘just because’ in you, and that is what I want to dedicate my project to – that little sparkle of ‘just because’ – little inner faith, belief, and ambiguous attraction that we have towards things.
Philosophy asks for practice. It is something that …
