Commentary On "Timbre As An Elusive Component Of Imagery For Music" By Freya Bailes, Andrea Halpern Jan 2019

Commentary On "Timbre As An Elusive Component Of Imagery For Music" By Freya Bailes, Andrea Halpern

Andrea Halpern

The study of musical timbre by Bailes (2007) raises important questions concerning the relative ease of imaging complex perceptual attributes such as timbre, compared to more unidimensional attributes. I also raise the issue of individual differences in auditory imagery ability, especially for timbre.

Orchestra Machines, Old And New, Jonathan De Souza Jul 2018

Orchestra Machines, Old And New, Jonathan De Souza

Jonathan De Souza

What is ‘orchestral’ about a networked laptop orchestra? And what is network-like about a classical orchestra? This article juxtaposes orchestras, nineteenth-century music machines, and twenty-first-century network music projects. Drawing on organology and cybernetics, it asks how these systems connect people and instruments. It considers interaction and coordination in particular networks, from the panharmonicon to PLork, but also their abstract informational topologies. Ultimately, orchestra machines, old and new, involve both technical and social organization—and, as such, they can be used to problematize the ontological separation of technology and society.

The Effects Of Diegetic And Nondiegetic Music On Viewers’ Interpretations Of A Film Scene, Elizabeth M. Wakefield, Siu-Lan Tan, Matthew P. Spackman Jan 2018

The Effects Of Diegetic And Nondiegetic Music On Viewers’ Interpretations Of A Film Scene, Elizabeth M. Wakefield, Siu-Lan Tan, Matthew P. Spackman

Elizabeth Wakefield

Previous studies have shown that pairing a film excerpt with different musical soundtracks can change the audience’s interpretation of the scene. This study examined the effects of mixing the same piece of music at different levels of loudness in a film soundtrack to suggest diegetic music (“source music,” presented as if arising from within the fictional world of the film characters) or to suggest nondiegetic music (a “dramatic score” accompanying the scene but not originating from within the fictional world). Adjusting the level of loudness significantly altered viewers’ perceptions of many elements that are fundamental to the storyline, including inferences …

Timbral Thievery: Synthesizers And Sonic Materiality, Jonathan De Souza Dec 2017

Timbral Thievery: Synthesizers And Sonic Materiality, Jonathan De Souza

Jonathan De Souza

Timbre often indexes an instrument’s materiality, and timbral variation often correlates with a player’s actions. Yet synthesizers complicate phenomenological links between sound and source. This chapter juxtaposes three instruments: an electromagnetic tuning-fork apparatus, developed by the nineteenth-century scientist Hermann von Helmholtz; the RCA Mark II, used by Milton Babbitt and other mid-twentieth-century composers; and the Yamaha GX-1, a large polyphonic synthesizer from the 1970s, played by Stevie Wonder and Keith Emerson. These synthesizers create new timbres and also imitate acoustic instruments, in a process that Robert Moog calls “timbral thievery.” Such imitations can provoke exaggerated or anxious discussions of synthetic …

Edward Elgar's "The Apostles" - A Major Oratorio Standing Outside Tradition, Thomas Lloyd Aug 2017

Edward Elgar's "The Apostles" - A Major Oratorio Standing Outside Tradition, Thomas Lloyd

Thomas Lloyd

Classical composer Edward Elgar’s oratorio The Apostles (1903) presents the mission of Christ viewed primarily through the eyes of Mary Magdalene and Judas Iscariot is discussed. The title of the work itself is belied by featuring a woman who was not one of "The Twelve" and a man who was the one apostle to defect from the rest. Elgar's distinctive use of Wagnerian "leitmotif" technique permeates the expansive form of the work, resulting in an exceptional example of the late Romantic juxtaposition of the cosmic and the personal in a multi-layered texture. When Elgar began composing The Apostles in 1990 …

Arnold Dolmetsch's "Green Harpsichord" And The Musical Arts And Crafts, Edmond Johnson Dec 2016

Arnold Dolmetsch's "Green Harpsichord" And The Musical Arts And Crafts, Edmond Johnson

Edmond Johnson

This study uses Arnold Dolmetsch’s “Green Harpsichord” as a starting point for a larger discussion of the relationship between Arnold Dolmetsch, William Morris, and other members of the Arts and Crafts movement who were active in London in the 1890s. Built in 1896 and displayed that same year by the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, the Green Harpsichord was the harpsichord built in England in nearly a century, and its design and decoration reflect its position as an object that had to negotiate the aesthetics of the past and the practical needs of the present. The article concludes by looking …
