A Hybrid Curriculum Of Private And Group Lessons For College Clarinet & Saxophone Studio Instruction, John M. Cipolla
A Hybrid Curriculum Of Private And Group Lessons For College Clarinet & Saxophone Studio Instruction, John M. Cipolla
Music Faculty Publications & Performances
This model of teaching presents a curriculum that blends traditional one-on-one private college studio instruction on the clarinet and saxophone with small group lessons. Each student receives a weekly forty-minute private lesson and a twenty-minute group lesson. This hybrid model of teaching is an approach that, for the administrator, (1) increases student credit hour production because more students can be taught in fewer hours (2) addresses the increasing state pressure to reduce degree credit hours by including chamber music in the studio curriculum (3) supports retention efforts by helping freshmen acclimate to college through camaraderie developed in groups. And for …

In September 2007, the University of Texas at El Paso Music Theatre Company embarked on a voyage of on-line discovery: how to utilize YouTube as a tool for self-and peer critique and outside professional review. Music Theatre Company is the Department of Music’s opera/music theatre skills development workshop and production company, presenting two to three scenes and/or full-scale productions each year. As such, its curriculum has traditionally revolved around the preparation and in-class coaching of songs, arias, and scenes, with public concert or production outcomes. The recent addition of a required textbook has added a necessary written assignment component; however, …

Chrome Pieces (2009)

Program notes: Chrome Pieces is in part an exploration of the coloristic capabilities of the brass quintet. Consisting of mostly fast, relatively concise music, the quintet features solos and duets in the inner movements while emphasizing full, equal ensemble participation in I and V, somewhat suggestive of the arch form. Further symmetry is provided by the use of mutes in II and IV. The opening movement, cast in three sections, is built around a marcato four-note figure yielding to a softer, lyric middle section. The tuba is …

Modern Performance Trends In Bach's Sacred Music : Changing Tastes In The Performance Of Bach's Weihnachtsoratorium : An Exploration Of The Rhetorical Style, Sam Nester
Theses : Honours
This dissertation investigates changing tastes in the performance practice of Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred music from the second decade of the Twentieth Century to the present day. In particular I focus on the 'rhetorical style', and offer a comparative study of four recordings of Bach's Weihnachtsoratoritmt (Christmas Oratorio) BWV 248 by Harnoncourt (1973), Gardiner (1987), Jacobs (1997), and Suzuki (1998). Though all of these interpretations would be categorised as being in the 'rhetorical style', I attempt to show that within this classification there exists a multiplicity of performance approaches.

An Investigation Of Specific Structural Techniques Used By The Miles Davis Quintet On Selected Live Recordings From 1964-1965, Callum G'Froerer
Theses : Honours
This dissertation intends to deconstruct and analyse specific structural techniques employed by members of Miles Davis' second great quintet, which consisted of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. The motivation behind the selection of structural techniques as the basis of this dissertation lies in its ability to clearly articulate a large aspect of the group's amazing flexibility as an ensemble. The specific areas of analysis are: tempo feel changes, tempo fluctuations, and texture changes. The recordings in focus are 'Autumn Leaves' from the album 'Miles In Berlin', and three selections from the influential live recording of two …
