The author presents an international and historical history of one of the earliest melodic percussion instruments made by man. His research suggests the instrument was widespread throughout Asia and Africa, although many other regions claim it to have originated in their country. Known by many names and created from an endless array of materials, this paper reflects the marimbas evolution from the fourteenth century to present day. The writer’s research encompasses the marimbas social roles, musical functions, timbres and styles across many countries as well as its evolution into the twenty-first century.

The Form Of The Preludes To Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Daniel E. Prindle

This thesis proposes a methodology for understanding the form of a Baroque prelude, particularly the preludes to the Six Suites for Unaccompanied Violoncello written by Johann Sebastian Bach. Four musical dimensions, tonal structure, motive, texture, and the potential implications of a piece’s genre, parse the preludes in different ways. As the features of these musical dimensions undergo either an evolution or a dramatic change over the course of each prelude, they each suggest a different form. Points of change in each dimension delineate segments in the music. When aligned, these changes create significant formal junctures and suggest an overall form …

Latin American piano repertoire for the elementary to intermediate level is not an easy subject since most of the available scores of famous Latin American composers are for the late intermediate or advanced level. Ernst Widmer (1927-1990), a Swiss composer who moved to Bahia, Brazil in 1956, composed Kosmos Latinoamericano between 1978 and 1982.
