‘Chismes De La Ciudad Letrada’: Nostalgia, Exilio Y La Construcción Del Canon Cubano En La Ensayística De Cabrera Infante, Ana B. Rodriguez Navas Jan 2022

‘Chismes De La Ciudad Letrada’: Nostalgia, Exilio Y La Construcción Del Canon Cubano En La Ensayística De Cabrera Infante, Ana B. Rodriguez Navas

Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Portrayal Of Race And Gender In Revolutionary Cuban Cinema, Sarah Bartley Apr 2021

The Portrayal Of Race And Gender In Revolutionary Cuban Cinema, Sarah Bartley

Honors Theses

Cinema has been one of the most useful tools to portray the political and social beliefs prevalent during a given point in history. Following the Cuban Revolution, once-marginalized communities were given far more opportunity to participate in education, in the workforce, and in society. Institutionalized racism and sexism were combatted as Fidel Castro’s major areas of focus after the Cuban Revolution’s 1959 victory. Class issues were improved as the wealth inequality that had defined pre-Revolutionary Cuba was minimized following the nationalizing of private property. Despite these improvements, however, there remained sentiments of dissatisfaction regarding social issues in Revolutionary Cuba, including …

Miedo, Celebración Y Otredad Racial En El Cambio De Siglo: Hacia La Construcción Del Negro En El Discurso Artístico-Literario Cubano (1880-1933), Alberto Sosa Cabanas May 2020

Miedo, Celebración Y Otredad Racial En El Cambio De Siglo: Hacia La Construcción Del Negro En El Discurso Artístico-Literario Cubano (1880-1933), Alberto Sosa Cabanas

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The disrupting visual and literary languages of the turn of the 19th century to the 1930’s constitute an area of research as a moment of crystallization of the Cuban national consciousness or identity. Writers and artists in Hispanic Caribbean region had to face the challenge of finding ways to include highly racialized elements (such as religion and popular culture) within the rhetorical space of the elites, in other words, what Angel Rama has labeled the "Republic of letters". The result of these efforts not only opened a new kind of negotiation of the idea of nation, but also meant …

La Lengua Gallega En La Diáspora Latinoamericana: La Tensión Entre Nacionalismo Y Sentimentalismo Y Sus Efectos En El Habla, Luke A. Bishop Jun 2019

La Lengua Gallega En La Diáspora Latinoamericana: La Tensión Entre Nacionalismo Y Sentimentalismo Y Sus Efectos En El Habla, Luke A. Bishop

Creando Cultura A Través De La Comida: Un Cuento De La Perseverancia Y El Ingenio Cubano, Gabriel Hatcher Jun 2019

Creando Cultura A Través De La Comida: Un Cuento De La Perseverancia Y El Ingenio Cubano, Gabriel Hatcher

World Languages and Cultures

This project analyzes the cultural impacts of Cuban culinary history starting with the 16th-century Spanish colonization. Cuba is an incredible case example for culinary adaptations due to its tumultuous history of population demographic shifts, political uprisings, and economic downturns. I will begin by analyzing the culinary shifts brought about the importation of African and Asian workers associated with the sugar cane industry. I then discuss the impact of the fall of the Batista government and the rise of the Cuban Revolutionary government. The Revolutionary government brought about standardization of available ingredients and helped popularize specific Cuban dishes until the fall …

Cuba I+Real: Singularidades De Lo Fantástico Y La Ciencia Ficción En La Cuba Contemporánea, Licet Garcia Nov 2018

Cuba I+Real: Singularidades De Lo Fantástico Y La Ciencia Ficción En La Cuba Contemporánea, Licet Garcia

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ever since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, Cuba has witnessed an unprecedented productive boom in the genres of science fiction and the fantastic. A large number of the literary and cinematic works that have surfaced during the last half-century attempt to replace and ultimately reify motifs and scenarios appropriated from the various science fiction and fantastic narratives in world literature and have generated alternative or imagined settings that challenge extant sociopolitical realities and certainties of the island. My dissertation, “Cuba i+Real: singularidades de lo fantástico y la ciencia ficción en la Cuba contemporánea”, examines these literary texts in …

Una Polémica En La Habana: La Poesía Erótica De Mercedes Matamoros, Jorge L. Camacho Jan 2018

Una Polémica En La Habana: La Poesía Erótica De Mercedes Matamoros, Jorge L. Camacho

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

Mercedes Matamoros was considered one of Cuba’s leading poets in late nineteenth century. She was also an outstanding representative of the modernist movement. However, very little have been written about her, the reason being the uneasiness some of her poems caused among her male readers. In this article I would like to explore the polemic that followed the publication of “El último amor de Safo” in Cuba’s journal El Fígaro, and the anonymous reviews that appeared in the Diario de la Marina. I would like to highlight how these poems were read at the time for their transgressive …

Exilios Secretos Y Sujetos Invisibles: Guillermo Cabrera Infante Y Antonio José Ponte, Isabel Alvarez-Borland

Poesía E Historicidad En Ernesto Cardenal Y Roberto Fernández Retamar, Alberto David Rivera Vaca Dec 2013

Poesía E Historicidad En Ernesto Cardenal Y Roberto Fernández Retamar, Alberto David Rivera Vaca

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes the meta-poetic and historicist thought in Ernesto Cardenal and Roberto Fernández Retamar’s poetry. The concept these poets have poetry is closely related to the historical moment of their times. They ponder about poetry and its function, poetic thought that is nourished by a historical consciousness. This close relationship between poetry and history inevitably includes sensitivity to the social situation in their respective countries and in Latin America. These poets seek to understand the concrete reality thus coming closer to the truth of things. The study shows that these poets, based on history and poetic thought, assume their …

La Voz Y La Violencia Invisible En El Cuento Caribeño Contemporáneo, Carmen Bourbon Jun 2009

La Voz Y La Violencia Invisible En El Cuento Caribeño Contemporáneo, Carmen Bourbon

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Some short stories by Caribbean women writers feature a female protagonist speaking in her own voice, telling her own story and coming to understand herself and her circumstances. In other texts, the protagonist's voice is challenged, overwhelmed or replaced by other voices, and she continues suffering psychologically. We examine the relationship between changes in the narrative voice and the female protagonist’s fate in twelve texts, demonstrating the consequences of her ability or inability to tell her story.

Each text displays a distinct correspondence between the protagonist’s life and how it is narrated. In "Masticar una rosa", "El lado frío de …
