Review Of: A Grammar Of Mangghuer: A Mongolic Language Of China's Qinghai-Gansu Sprachbund, Edward J. Vajda Dec 2006

Review Of: A Grammar Of Mangghuer: A Mongolic Language Of China's Qinghai-Gansu Sprachbund, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

One of the least remarked aspects of the Mongol conquest is the dissemination of Mongolic languages to various corners of Eurasia. Like the far-flung remnants of a supernova, some of these are still spoken today. Keith Slater's book is a detailed synchronic description of one such language, called Mangghuer, which has received little attention from Western linguists before the appearance of this study.

Review Of: Gender In Indo-European, Edward J. Vajda Dec 2006

Review Of: Gender In Indo-European, Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

This book takes a fresh look at the development of gender in Early and Late Proto-Indo-European. Matasovic reduces the diachronic picture to a few basic facts, while also making informed comparisons with non-Indo-European (IE) languages. Early Proto-IE appears to reveal a binary noun-class opposition between a common gender and a neuter gender, with the feminine arising only later

Review Of: Beginning Creek (Mvskoke Emponvkv), Edward J. Vajda Dec 2006

Review Of: Beginning Creek (Mvskoke Emponvkv), Edward J. Vajda

Modern & Classical Languages

This introductory course is aimed at speakers who wish to maintain and pass on their ancestral language. Each chapter begins with a straightforward explanation of the concepts covered, so even students with no formal linguistic training will find the presentation easy to follow. At the same time, the material is sophisticated enough to be of illustrative value to typologists as well. The inclusion of morpheme glosses beneath most example sentences should be particularly welcome to the serious linguist.

The Liar As A Comic Figure In Plays By Ruiz De Alarcon, Corneille And Moliere, Robert Matthew Patrick Dec 2006

The Liar As A Comic Figure In Plays By Ruiz De Alarcon, Corneille And Moliere, Robert Matthew Patrick

Doctoral Dissertations

This study on the liar as a comic figure centers on protagonists in five seventeenth-century comic plays: La verdad sospechosa (Ruiz de Alarcon), Melite, Le Menteur (Corneille), Tartuffe and Dom Juan (Moliere). It applies a model combining the concepts of "ironic comedy" (Frye), "the world as stage," metatheater, and theories of laughter. Through this model, supplemented by a comparative-literature approach and additional research, the study attempts to demonstrate that in the plays examined an alazon (impostor) is always punished for his contempt for an ideal of truth that is conceived mainly in secular terms, as well as that in the …

Fact Or Fable? Female Gender And Sexuality In Villedieu’S Histoires Allégoriques, Russell J. Ganim Oct 2006

Fact Or Fable? Female Gender And Sexuality In Villedieu’S Histoires Allégoriques, Russell J. Ganim

French Language and Literature Papers

In many respects, the Fables ou Histoires allégoriques of Marie-Catherine Desjardins, more commonly known as Madame de Villedieu (1640?–1683), can be read in terms of the sexual politics of neo-classical France. Unlike many of her other works, the Fables serve in part as a defense and illustration of female presence and sexuality. A moral that emerges in the nine tales she classifies as “fables” is that the female gender proves as authoritative and as intelligent as the male and that female sexuality should be considered as natural and as legitimate as its masculine equivalent. In her dedication to Louis XIV, …

Theatre And The Rwandan Genocide, Marie-Chantal Kalisa Oct 2006

Theatre And The Rwandan Genocide, Marie-Chantal Kalisa

French Language and Literature Papers

In 1994, Rwanda was the scene of genocide, or more precisely in French, “le théâtre du génocide” (theatre of genocide). Perpetrators and victims played their role while the rest of the world watched the “spectacle” live on television. Perhaps because of its spectacular aspect, the Rwandan genocide has inspired a number of artistic materials. In the last decade, we have indeed witnessed the growth of literary and artistic expression in relation to the Rwandan genocide. Survivors and witnesses have told their stories in books and songs. Journalists, as well as other travelers “to the end of Rwanda,” to use Véronique …

Developing Teachers Who Are Reflective Practitioners: A Complex Process, Alcione N. Ostorga Oct 2006

Developing Teachers Who Are Reflective Practitioners: A Complex Process, Alcione N. Ostorga

Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Teachers everywhere are being held accountable for their professional actions through the test-driven curricula sweeping the nation. The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE, 2002) makes it clear that promotion of reflective practice is an important component of teacher education programs. This multiple case study examines the relationship between epistemic stances and reflective thinking using a set of theories and instruments that allowed for the analysis of these constructs. The participants' epistemic stances were examined through the use of instruments developed by Baxter-Magolda (1992) while the qualitative aspects of reflective thinking were examined through the use of …

De Princesas Y Hadas Madrinas: La Cárcel De Género En Tigre Juan Y El Curandero De Su Honra De Ramón Pérez De Ayala, María Francisca Paredes Méndez

Modern & Classical Languages

Hung Kai Lee Sep 2006

Hung Kai Lee

Lingnan Journal of Chinese Studies (1999-2006)

She began writing short stories and screenplays in the late 1960s and she has distinguished herself as a writer not only in Russia, but also worldwide. Her films have won awards, and her stories have been widely read and translated. Poética De Lo Soez: Luis Rafael Sánchez: Identidad Y Cultura En América Latina Y En El Caribe, Julio César Sánchez Rondón

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Review Of: Galdos Beyond Realism: Reading And The Creation Of Magical Worlds, Joan M. Hoffman May 2006

Review Of: Galdos Beyond Realism: Reading And The Creation Of Magical Worlds, Joan M. Hoffman

Modern & Classical Languages

Timothy McGovern's latest offering, Galdós Beyond Realism: Reading and the Creation of Magical Worlds, may prove surprising, if not a bit unsettling, for the die-hard, skeptical fan of Spanish High Realism who can not imagine the words "Galdós" and "magical worlds" in the same sentence. Nonetheless, McGovern presents a fascinating examination of what he terms Don Benito's "magical fictions" (7). He jostles us out of our comfort zone, examining "post-realist, non-realist, or magical" Galdosian works that push the limits of traditional realism through the employment of metafictional and magical frames, supernatural interventions, and a very conscious lack of verisimilitude (29). …

Literary Symbolism, Marshall C. Olds Mar 2006

Literary Symbolism, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

As a school of literature, Symbolism refers to three phases of a vital part of the development of literary modernism: first to an artistic movement in France and Belgium during the last decade and a half of the nineteenth century; then, retrospectively and most importantly, to its immediate sources in French poetry beginning in the 1850s; and finally to the influence that both of these had on European and American literatures throughout the first half of the twentieth century. The designation then, had its original and official application to the second and, it must be owned, from a literary point …

English Or Spanish?! Language Accommodation In New York City Service Encounters, Laura Callahan Mar 2006

English Or Spanish?! Language Accommodation In New York City Service Encounters, Laura Callahan

Modern Languages & Literature

Speech accommodation theory refers to an individual's adaptation of his or her speech to more closely approximate that of an interlocutor. A change to the interlocutor's language is one of the most obvious and observable forms of accommodation. Language choices are shaped by the linguistic proficiency of both speaker and interlocutor, the ingroup or outgroup status of each, and the situational norms for the setting in which an exchange takes place. Language choices in the workplace are further influenced by company policies and by the asymmetrical power dynamic in worker-customer interactions.

This paper reports on data from service encounters with …

‘Der Mensch Prüfe Sich Selbst ...’: Eine Predigt Nathanaël Köstlins Als Kontext Für Hölderlins Ersten Erhaltenen Brief, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jan 2006

‘Der Mensch Prüfe Sich Selbst ...’: Eine Predigt Nathanaël Köstlins Als Kontext Für Hölderlins Ersten Erhaltenen Brief, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

Rulfo En Donoso: Comala Y El Olivo Como Espacios Infernales, Iker González-Allende
