Review Of: L'Lo E Il Tu, Michiko Yusa, Massimiliano Tomasi Oct 1998

Review Of: L'Lo E Il Tu, Michiko Yusa, Massimiliano Tomasi

Modern & Classical Languages

L'lo e II Tu is an Italian translation of Nishida KitarO's 1932 essay, "Watakushi to Nanji" (I and Thou), with an introduction by the translator, Renato Andolfato. The translation is followed by an essay by Giangiorgio Pasqualotto, the author of II Tao della Filosofia (1989), who teaches at the University of Padova. The present book grew out of Andolfato's graduation thesis of 1994 for the University of Venice. Since Nishida's "I and Thou" has never been translated until now, this is a welcome addition to the field of Nishida Studies. The book tells its readers something about the scholarly interest …

Terrorismo Poético: Juan Calzadilla Y Caupolicán Ovalles, William Martínez

World Languages and Cultures

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko, 1853-1921, Radha Balasubramanian Sep 1998

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko, 1853-1921, Radha Balasubramanian

Russian Language and Literature Papers

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko is well known not only as a publicist and a humanitarian, but also as a writer. His voluminous publicistic writing, based on his service to the people, championed truth and justice. It ranges from exposing activities of the local gentry in their manipulation of the city’s bank, court, and local zemstvo, to condemning the revolutionaries openly, after they took over power, for not complying with the law and for forcing changes too rapidly. As a writer of fiction, Korolenko’s contribution to Russian narrative prose is in the form of short stories.

Future Mallarmé (Present Picasso): Portraiture And Self-Portraiture In Poetry And Art, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Let us turn to what might at first seem the improbable encounter between Stéphane Mallarmé and Pablo Picasso. On the face of it, so much separates them: the one patiently mining a limited set of aesthetic notions, spending years perfecting some of his major works, the other incessantly exploring all possibilities of visual representation, moving through styles sometimes weekly, creating prodigiously in different media, living dozens of careers. In their separate ways, though, they both were extreme examples of creativity. Whether or not for that reason, Picasso turned toward (if not to) Mallarmé at two distinct points in his career: …

Elaboración De Una Poética En Los Ensayos Tempranos De Octavio Paz, J. Agustín Pastén B. Jun 1998

Elaboración De Una Poética En Los Ensayos Tempranos De Octavio Paz, J. Agustín Pastén B.

Consolation And The Work Of Mourning In Angéline De Montbrun, Thomas M. Carr Jr. May 1998

Consolation And The Work Of Mourning In Angéline De Montbrun, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

The dynamics of this foundational text of Canadian literature come from its heroine's drive to resolve her overwhelming sense of loss. Angéline loses her father, her beauty, and the love of her fiance Maurice within the space of three pages against a backdrop formed by memory of the loss suffered at the Conquest. Indeed, reading the novel under the sign of resignation is a commonplace. Critics as diverse as the early Catholic reviewers, more recent biographically-oriented researchers, and Freudian and feminist commentators have underscored Angeline's attempts to resign herself to this succession of losses. To a lesser extent they have …

Review Of Emblems And Alchemy, By Alison Adams & Stanton J. Linden, Eds., Russell J. Ganim Mar 1998

Review Of Emblems And Alchemy, By Alison Adams & Stanton J. Linden, Eds., Russell J. Ganim

French Language and Literature Papers

Combining revived interest in both the emblem and alchemy, this volume is the third in a series of works on emblem studies published by the French Department at the University of Glasgow. Its ten essays, divided among three major categories entitled, “A Theoretical Perspectives”, “The English Alchemists”, and “Continental Manifestations”, stress inter disciplinarity as they explore the relationships between text, image, and alchemical practice. Broad in scope but detailed in its analyses, the compendium raises several intriguing questions about the correspondence between literature, art, and pseudo-science. Despite the diversity of its topics, the collection is often surprisingly unified in its …

Less Or More Black And White? Reassessing Genet's Les Nègres In Light Of Both Published Versions, Brian G. Kennelly Jan 1998

Less Or More Black And White? Reassessing Genet's Les Nègres In Light Of Both Published Versions, Brian G. Kennelly

World Languages and Cultures

Each of the five plays by Jean Genet performed before his death in 1986 exists in more than one published version.2 Critics have discussed the differences between the various published versions of each play3 with the exception of Les nègres: the drama commissioned by Raymond Rouleau, first published by Marc Barbezat in 1958, first performed in a production by Roger Blin at the Thèâtre de Lutèce in Paris in 1959, and published in a revised edition the following year.

Why have the changes Genet made to Les nègres remained undiscussed? Perhaps the attention of critics, like that …

Pedro Calderón De La Barca, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Don Pedro Calderón de Ia Barca was born on January 17, 1600, to parents of noble lineage. Although little is known of the early years of his life, it has been determined that Calderón attended the Jesuit Colegio Imperial in Madrid from about 1608 to about 1613. His mother died in 1610, after which his brother Diego left abruptly for Mexico, his sister Dorotea entered a convent, and his youngest sister Antonia went to live with her grandmother. In 1614, Pedro entered the University of Alcalá, and in 1615, after the death of his father, he went to study at …

Mithridate, Displacement, And The Sea, Nina Ekstein Jan 1998

Mithridate, Displacement, And The Sea, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

When Mithridate opens, the king is rumored dead in Colchide, killed by the Romans in battle. His return by sea at the end of the first act is not merely a surprise, but also a temporal, geographical, and almost metaphysical displacement. Mithridate's homecoming turns everything upside down and brings the full force of incest to the amorous rivalry between Phamace and Xipharès. Having successfully spread rumors of his own demise, Mithridate seems to return from the dead, arriving after an absence of a year, from a relatively distant land by the waters of the Pont-Euxin (the Black Sea). Life and …

A number of studies have shown that learning through the use of computers is more efficient than traditional methods and arouse students motivation (Johnson & Osguthorpe, 1986; Jung, 1992 ). The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI), to investigate the immense potential of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), and then to identify ways in which computers can be used to enhance foreign language learning.
