L'lo e II Tu is an Italian translation of Nishida KitarO's 1932 essay, "Watakushi to Nanji" (I and Thou), with an introduction by the translator, Renato Andolfato. The translation is followed by an essay by Giangiorgio Pasqualotto, the author of II Tao della Filosofia (1989), who teaches at the University of Padova. The present book grew out of Andolfato's graduation thesis of 1994 for the University of Venice. Since Nishida's "I and Thou" has never been translated until now, this is a welcome addition to the field of Nishida Studies. The book tells its readers something about the scholarly interest …

Vladimir Galaktionovich Korolenko is well known not only as a publicist and a humanitarian, but also as a writer. His voluminous publicistic writing, based on his service to the people, championed truth and justice. It ranges from exposing activities of the local gentry in their manipulation of the city’s bank, court, and local zemstvo, to condemning the revolutionaries openly, after they took over power, for not complying with the law and for forcing changes too rapidly. As a writer of fiction, Korolenko’s contribution to Russian narrative prose is in the form of short stories.

Let us turn to what might at first seem the improbable encounter between Stéphane Mallarmé and Pablo Picasso. On the face of it, so much separates them: the one patiently mining a limited set of aesthetic notions, spending years perfecting some of his major works, the other incessantly exploring all possibilities of visual representation, moving through styles sometimes weekly, creating prodigiously in different media, living dozens of careers. Each of the five plays by Jean Genet performed before his death in 1986 exists in more than one published version.² Critics have discussed the differences between the various published versions of each play³ with the exception of Les nègres: the drama commissioned by Raymond Rouleau, first published by Marc Barbezat in 1958, first performed in a production by Roger Blin at the Thèâtre de Lutèce in Paris in 1959, and published in a revised edition the following year.

Don Pedro Calderón de Ia Barca was born on January 17, 1600, to parents of noble lineage. Although little is known of the early years of his life, it has been determined that Calderón attended the Jesuit Colegio Imperial in Madrid from about 1608 to about 1613. His mother died in 1610, after which his brother Diego left abruptly for Mexico, his sister Dorotea entered a convent, and his youngest sister Antonia went to live with her grandmother. When Mithridate opens, the king is rumored dead in Colchide, killed by the Romans in battle. His return by sea at the end of the first act is not merely a surprise, but also a temporal, geographical, and almost metaphysical displacement. Mithridate's homecoming turns everything upside down and brings the full force of incest to the amorous rivalry between Phamace and Xipharès. Having successfully spread rumors of his own demise, Mithridate seems to return from the dead, arriving after an absence of a year, from a relatively distant land by the waters of the Pont-Euxin (the Black Sea).
