Renaissance Self-Destruction: The Virtue And Danger Of Chess In European Literature, Kaleth Marcus Torrens-Martin
Renaissance Self-Destruction: The Virtue And Danger Of Chess In European Literature, Kaleth Marcus Torrens-Martin
Senior Projects Spring 2023
This thesis will argue that in the western European tradition, chess in literature represents both a pedagogical tool which instructs one in the art of living well, through allegory and Platonic dialogue, but also a Narcissan mirror uncannily similar to reality. As a tool and intellectual pastime, chess is virtuous, but latent with depths dangerously enthralling as an end in itself. Thus, chess carries inside its squares a lesson for living virtuously in the world but the danger arises when the chess mirror becomes a world unto itself. It is a game of self-fashioning and self-destruction. Instead of remaining confined …
From Mouth To Mind: A Close Examination Of Two Carved Boxwood Peapods Through Print, Paint, And Sculpture & References To Fertility, Amanda Jane Mason
From Mouth To Mind: A Close Examination Of Two Carved Boxwood Peapods Through Print, Paint, And Sculpture & References To Fertility, Amanda Jane Mason
Senior Projects Spring 2023
Senior Project submitted to The Division of Arts of Bard College.
The following three chapters consider the boxwood peapods against the context gathered from different sources. In chapter one, I look at the inspiration for the shape of the carvings: the peapod. Today, peapods like snap peas and snow peas, are common throughout the world, and while the medieval world had more seasonal access to the plant, peapods and similar legumes were often still a staple food throughout Europe and the Mediterranean, so much so that they were mentioned in the Old Testament. Chapter two turns to representations of peapods …

Oh, To Be A Barbarian! Reclaiming Medieval Law And The Exceptional Individual, Huba F. Zaman
Oh, To Be A Barbarian! Reclaiming Medieval Law And The Exceptional Individual, Huba F. Zaman
Senior Projects Spring 2023
The desire for the exceptional individual represented is analyzed in this project. The texts in this senior project represent how it is the systems of governance in place, especially during the medieval era in the East and Western-Europe, that celebrate this paradoxical position that the exceptional individual holds within the confines of a structured society. They embrace the chaos these exceptional individuals represent in a way that modern day justice systems find it hard to fathom. The Western-European feudal system encourages hero figures, like Roland, Lancelot, and William Marshal, to emerge from the average honorable man. Similarly in a system …
Golden Temptresses: The Petrifying Beauty Of Pre-Raphaelite Women, Zoe Julienne Claire Manwiller
Golden Temptresses: The Petrifying Beauty Of Pre-Raphaelite Women, Zoe Julienne Claire Manwiller
Senior Projects Spring 2023
Senior Project submitted to The Division of Arts of Bard College.
This project considers the tension between fear and desire, a tension that makes Pre-Raphaelite paintings, and the women they depict, dangerously powerful and alluring. Chapter One focuses in particular on the inner nature of these women using visual signs that suggest complexity beneath the surface. I use the term hybridity to think through the tension of fear and desire. Chapter Two shifts to look at the outer environments and the way in which the danger and fear are mediated by solitude, weaving, reflections, and the expectation of piety.

Accommodation And Coping In Medieval Catholic England: A Historical Dramaturgy Casebook For The Chester Mystery Cycle’S Play 14: Christ At The House Of Simon The Leper, Christ And The Moneylenders, And Judas’ Plot, Andrew J. Roberge
Senior Projects Spring 2022
In this historically focused dramaturgy casebook for the medieval Catholic Chester Mystery Cycle's Play 14, Christ at the House of Simon the Leper, Christ and the Moneylenders, and Judas’ Plot, I offer suggestions for Play 14's production as it might have appeared in the cycle's final year of performance, 1575. I contextualize and grapple with the play's antisemitisms, and also offer a brief history of antisemitism in medieval Europe. I also analyze Play 14 and the Chester Mystery Cycle for their rhetorical appeals to the medieval vernacular language, contexts, and events, as well as their anachronistic temporal and geographic …
Theophila, Theophila Mathilda Barickman
Theophila, Theophila Mathilda Barickman
Senior Projects Spring 2022
This project attempts to understand the relationship between a Medieval anchoress and Christ as a romantic relationship rather than a spiritual metaphor. Mystical marriage, the union of a human woman with Christ, son of God, is a popular formulation of the relationship a medieval anchoress experiences through her religious enclosure. Through analysis of a collection of thirteenth century Middle English texts written to instruct anchoresses on the maintenance of mystical marriage, I argue that the love between the anchoress and God is produced through action rather than a spontaneously generated emotion. The Katherine Group, or Ancrene Wisse Group, consists …

Wild Wales: How Cultural Discrimination Transformed Merlin From Brittonic Legends To French Arthurian Romances, Viveca Calista Lawrie
Wild Wales: How Cultural Discrimination Transformed Merlin From Brittonic Legends To French Arthurian Romances, Viveca Calista Lawrie
Senior Projects Spring 2021
The legend of King Arthur and his knights of the round table is one of the best-known stories in the Western world. Generally people tend to associate Arthurian legend with fifteenth-century English writing or French romances, but in reality, Arthurian legend has its origins in Brittonic oral tradition. Merlin, specifically, represents the concepts of Brittonic paganism and wildness more than any other Arthurian character. The changes made in the character and the narrative of Merlin, from Brittonic legend to Latin writing and then to French romances, reflect a political and cultural shift in Britain and France. An examination of Merlin …

Trojans Abroad: Two Thousand Years Of Wandering, Kristof S. Szabo
Trojans Abroad: Two Thousand Years Of Wandering, Kristof S. Szabo
Senior Projects Spring 2021
This study explores three different claims made on a Trojan foundational myth, centered around the cultures found in Rome, Britain, and Scandinavia. Why would these peoples, centuries removed from the epic race, make such a claim as the basis for their history? This project studies the history of these distinct cultures, how and where they gained their understanding of the Trojan legend, and under what motivations did they wish to make their individual claims. The project then turns to a close reading of the specific literature that constructs the Trojan allegation: Vergil's Aeneid, Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regnum Britanniae, …

Tell Me A Story; Hell Hath No Fury: A Set Of Voice Recitals On The Overlap Of Music, Literature, And Classics, And Their Treatment And Depiction Of Women, Alexandra Hobart Gilman
Senior Projects Spring 2020
Over the past four years, I have had the privilege of answering the question, “what is your major?” My reply exists in various degrees of specificity. I am a Music major. I am a Classical Voice major. I am a voice major who is concentrating in Medieval Studies. Layer upon layer is added. The more specific I am, the more niche it all seems to become. Yet, that which I love exists in these niches, the in-between spaces where different areas of academia come together to create something new. Something that I have always appreciated about art, in general, is …

The Game At The Green Chapel: A Game-Oriented Perspective On Chivalry In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight, Joshua David Maldonado
Senior Projects Spring 2020
Like many things in life, the very idea of a game contradicts itself. A game is so many conflicting things at once. All in good fun, but with the focused goal of winning. A closed space with no consequences, yet personally affecting outside its boundaries. Often playful, yet deathly serious. The games we make and play often have a hand in deciding our identities. What kinds of games do we play, and how often? Who do we play them with? How seriously do we take them, and how do we react to certain outcomes? Do we learn from our mistakes …

Chaucer's Critique Of Romance: Anelida And Arcite, Troilus And Criseyde, And The "Knight's Tale", Vivian (Yuwei) Han
Senior Projects Spring 2020
As the Father of English Literature and a significant figure who brought the tradition of romance into the Middle English vernacular, Chaucer developed a remarkable refinement and precision of use of his language in fully taking the tradition of romance from the French courtly literature into his own way of demonstration as well as adapting and transforming the innovative form of historical romance, or romanticized epic, from the Italians into his originality. This project analyses Chaucer's Anelida and Arcita, Troilus and Criseyde, and the "Knight's Tale" as his critique of romance and its ideals. is concerned with how Chaucer’s language …
Losing Shahrazad: A Distant Reading Of 1001 Nights, Taysa Mohler
Losing Shahrazad: A Distant Reading Of 1001 Nights, Taysa Mohler
Senior Projects Spring 2018
This project is a distant reading analysis of seven 19th and 20th-century English translations of One Thousand and One Nights or The Arabian Nights. Through the use of computer programming and distant reading, it becomes clear that the Nights' frame tale is the carrier of the internal logic and generative power of the story cycle. Further, the frame tale expresses the Nights' self-representation, which serves to undermine the historical use of the Nights as synecdoche for the Orient. Therefore, the translators that remove the frame story from their versions further the Nights' use as an Orientalist object, …
