Whether he knew it or not, Mel Gibson touched on theological traditions formed long after the lifetime of Jesus in his movie, The Passion of Christ. To have them shape a movie that purports to tell a story set during the lifetime of Jesus – even if only in his last twelve hours – adds a confusing kind of anachronism to Gibson’s effort to “tell it like it was.” It (the movie) is as it (the history) wasn’t.

In general, anti-Jewish bias in the Christian community does not go back to the New Testament (NT) itself (since its authors were Jews) but arises shortly afterward through misreadings of ambiguous passages written by these Jews. What often passes for anti-Jewish sentiment in the NT is excerpted from a dispute within the Jewish community as to what it means to be a good Jew. When cited later by non-Jews, Paul's and John's passionate wording leant itself easily to anti-Jewish interpretation.

The purpose of this study is to sketch the positive and negative dimensions in the Latin liturgy of the Church's relationship to Judaism and the Jewish people during the period prior to the sixteenth century. Seasons of the liturgical year and particular ceremonies are discussed in some detail to present the impact of the liturgy on the perception of Catholics regarding their Jewish neighbors.

In Jewish tradition the five books of Moses hold the place of honor in Israel's sacred writings as the Torah or "instruction" of God. Some people, even in ancient times, seemed to emphasize the legislative teachings or commandments, so the Greek translators chose the word "Nomos" or "Law" to render Torah.
