“’Our Women Are Made of the Right Stuff:’ Gender, Politics, and Conflict in Civil War West Virginia” examines the lives and contributions of white West Virginia women and argues that they were not merely victims of the war, but dynamic participants whose opinions were influential and whose actions determined the ability of both the Union and Confederate armies to wage war in Appalachia. This collection contains the personal, educational, and professional possessions of Mildred Mitchell-Bateman. The collection includes correspondence, newspaper articles, association newsletters, professional planners, financial documents, plaques, and other personal memorabilia. The materials document Bateman’s various roles within local, state, and national psychology and psychiatric organizations. The collection is organized into six series: Series 1, Personal; Series 2, Education; Series 3, Professional Experience; Series 4, Correspondence; Series 5, Associations; and Series 6, Bound Books, Bound Volumes and list of Newspapers.

Given the collection’s small size, the decision was made to keep the collection’s original order as found and not divide into series. Broader thematic content of the collection includes state level financial and treasurer’s papers organizing the conference as well as financial documents submitted to receive reimbursement from the IWY grant funds appropriated by Congress. Additional state materials include correspondence to and from the Treasurer for WV IWY, Betsy McCreight, publicity materials and brochures, reports, and financial material related to delegates attending the national conference.

Box 3 includes materials for the national IWY Conference, including manuals, publicity materials, and publications.

Oral History Interview: Irene D. Broh, Irene D. Broh

Irene D. Broh was born on November 20, 1880, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Through the influence of her mother, a suffragist who worked with Susan B. Anthony, Mrs. Broh joined the suffrage movement and helped women earn the right to vote. After marrying Ephraim Broh in 1909, she moved to Huntington, WV, where she organized a suffrage club in 1915. Mrs. Broh became the first woman to vote in Cabell County, WV, in 1920. In her interview, Mrs. Broh focuses on her work for women’s suffrage.
