The Second Century Fund campaign to raise money for a multi-purpose sports arena and performing arts center is running far behind its scheduled November deadline. According to Parker G. Cushman, director of the Physical Plant, parts of the planned construction for the sports arena may have to be postponed due to inflation.

"Homosexuality and gay liberation are symptoms of a sexually healthy society," said activist Morty Manford at the Maine Gay Symposium here Saturday. Over 300 paying observers attended the well-organized gathering which met with no violent opposition, picketing, or demonstrations as had been feared by some UMO administrators. A team of four campus policemen guarded the affair which was sponsored by the Wilde-Stein Club, UMO's gay group.

Despite loud dissent from a number of residents, Somerset Hall has been the most responsive Hilltop dorm to a need for housing for guests attending the Maine Gay Symposium on campus this weekend. Members of the campus Wilde-Stein Club, hosts for the statewide convention, could not get space for weekend guests at Augusta Hall on the Bangor campus where accommodations are usually made for those attending conventions at the university. Members of the DeMolay are staying there this weekend.

The fifth annual Maine Gay Symposium will be held at Bangor Community College Friday, March 31, through Sunday, April 2. The three day event, sponsored by the Wilde-Stein Club at UMO, the Gay People's Alliance, Mainly Gay of Portland, and the Maine Lesbian-Feminists, will include about 20 workshops on a variety of gay issues.

A Bangor minister has accused a Bangor radio station, WLBZ, of dropping his program, "In Times Like These," because of his attacks on the Wilde-Stein Club at UMO. The Rev. Herman C. Frankland was notified last Friday that his program was being dropped and he was not to present the program he had scheduled for Saturday's airing which was a second affront to the homosexual group. His previous broadcast criticized the university's condoning of the group's existence on campus and the trustees' decision to allow the gay group to hold a conference on campus in April.

A resolution that would have granted $200 to the Wilde-Stein Club was defeated by the Student Senate Tuesday night after nearly an hour of emotional debate. The resolution, defeated by a vote of 28-10-3, was introduced in the Senate last week after the group was granted $150. The original request for $400 made by the Wilde-Stein Club was reduced at a Finance Committee meeting to $150.

Next, we find out that the Republican House members, during a party caucus, decided they can't consider giving the University of Maine any more money until the Board of Trustees reneges on their decision to let the gays hold the statewide conference at UMO.
