The Quest For Woman Suffrage In Arkansas, Michele Roussel

The struggle for woman suffrage in Arkansas and the entire United States did not end until the twentieth century. It was a long and difficult process but in 1917 with the passage of the Arkansas Primary Suffrage Bill, Arkansas women were allowed to vote in primaries. Then, in 1920 they were given full suffrage rights through the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. In order for these events to occur, women's traditional role had to change in Arkansas and the nation, and it had to be accepted by both men and women. The purpose of this thesis is to consider the political career of Lawrence Yates Sherman. Sherman, who served as United States Senator from Illinois, 1913-1921, was a colorful individual in Congress during one of the Republic's more turbulent periods. As a United States Senator, Sherman dealt with many vital issues. However, Senator Sherman is best-known for his "irreconcilable" position on the question of ratification of the Treaty of the League of Nations.
