La historiografía cinematográfica española se ha basado tradicionalmente en premisas ideológicas y estéticas que reducen el estudio de las estrategias de repesentacion del cine exclusivamente a su evolución desde el punto de vista de la producción obviando la existencia del público. Así, los cambios en la representación se han abordado o políticamente como consecuencia del proceso de transición de la dictadura a la democracia o historiográficamente mediante su adscripción a las tendencias ideológicas existentes en el cine español del periodo.

The paper discusses concepts of ‘nature’ and ‘life’ as subjected to historical changes. The 21st century seems to be obsessed with ‘life’ and ‘nature’, which are reconfigured as objects of simulation practices and of a multitude of technoscientific enterprises as well as of political struggle. Abstract: Antígona: Glosa nova da tragédia de Sófocles was a play written and directed by António Pedro for the second public performance of Teatro Experimental do Porto, in 1954. This play bears witness to the way in which Pedro engaged with the social realities of his time. Therefore, this paper examines how aesthetic and social features come together, in order to create an innovative adaptation of a classical theme in the context of the Portuguese 1950s. Women were active participants in the anti-slavery movement. They made up a large portion of professional abolitionists who traveled the country to educate the public on the perils of slavery. Unfortunately, their efforts were hindered by their gender, and it led to the restriction of their rights to speak publicly on the issue of slavery. This essay examines the development, implementation, and assessment of a revolutionary Core Curriculum adopted by Saint Joseph’s College (Indiana) in 1969. It argues that a group of dedicated and pioneering faculty and administrators, led by President Charles Banet, responded to reform movements in higher education and the Catholic Church by replacing the college’s general education curriculum with a Core Program that emphasized collegiality, humanism, and faculty-led discussions in which professors acted as “co-learners” rather than experts. Uncompromising Spirits: The Entwined Careers Of William Lloyd Garrison And Josephine Butler, Anne A. Salter, Charles O. Boyd

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

William Lloyd Garrison and Josephine Butler challenged the political structures of their times. Both employed similar strategies to turn the mind set of American and British citizens. Garrison’s work as an American abolitionist inspired Butler and her work to repeal the Contagious Diseases Acts in Great Britain. Their life long commitment to liberty and justice was successful proving that one person can make a difference. Brief character sketches of each serve to revive interest in these important but somewhat neglected individuals.

Evidence supports the notion that mathematics education in the United States is inadequate. There is also evidence that mathematics education deficiencies extend internationally. The worldwide mathematics education deficit appears large enough that improving student performance in this educational problem area could yield great economic benefit. The development of a British identity was an ongoing process during the seventeenth century. In this paper, I argue that the ascension of James to the English throne in 1603 would be integral to the establishing of a British identity in both England and Scotland. James, from 1604 to 1607, tried to create a political union between the two kingdoms but would ultimately fail due to English concerns (primarily in Parliament) about the "imperfect union" and the absence of any tradition to sustain a new kingdom. Eugene Onegin The Cold War Monument: How Edmund Wilson Quarreled With Vladimir Nabokov, Tim Conley

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The tale of how Edmund Wilson quarreled with Vladimir Nabokov over the latter’s 1964 translation of Eugene Onegin can be instructively read as a politically charged event, specifically a “high culture” allegory of the Cold War. Dissemination of anti-Communist ideals (often in liberal and literary guises) was the mandate of the Congress for Cultural Freedom, whose funding and editorial initiatives included the publication of both pre-Revolution Russian literature and, more notoriously, the journal Encounter (1953-1990), where Nabokov’s fiery “Reply” to Wilson appeared. This essay outlines the propaganda value of the Onegin debate within and to Cold War mythology.
