Defining The Spiritual Aspects In The Pure Dance Of Bharata Natyam, Bevin Stark Nov 2007

Defining The Spiritual Aspects In The Pure Dance Of Bharata Natyam, Bevin Stark

MALS Final Projects, 1995-2019

Bharata natyam is herald as a sacred art. The goal of all traditional Indian arts is to evoke rasa (a tasting of spiritual bliss) in the artist as well as the spectator. I have personally experienced a spiritual power while performing and practicing this ancient dance form. Bharata natya has two main aspects to its dance presentation: natya (story-telling), and nrtta (pure dance technique). The natya portion clearly nurtures devotional feelings and religious contemplation by retelling stories of the gods, of the great Hindu epics and of myths. This study focuses on the subtle role that the nrtta portion of …

Becoming A Good Neighbor In Southeast Asia: The Case Of China's Territorial Disputes In The South China Sea, 1989–2006, Dirk Richard Morton

An Overlooked Dimension Of The Korean War: The Role Of Christianity And American Missionaries In The Rise Of Korean Nationalism, Anti -Colonialism, And Eventual Civil War, 1884-1953, Kai Yin Allison Haga

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This dissertation reveals how religious factors affected the development of the Korean War. Much prior research has analyzed the causes and nature of the Korean War, in part because of the war's impact upon later events, from the Cold War to the present day geopolitical standoff. Though the war has been much-studied, religious factors have rarely been included in these analyses. This de-emphasis of religion may be a justifiable simplification in general war historiographies, but not in the specific case of Korea. This current study uncovers the unique role of religion in Korean-American relations and in Korean culture and politics, …
