Maine Folklife Center Newsletter
As the incoming director of the Folklife Center, I [James Moreira] have been asked to write a short piece to introduce myself to the members and supporters. It seems, after all, the traditional thing to do in such circumstances.
Originally from Nova Scotia, I have spent much of the past twenty years living in Newfoundland, most recently on the stunningly beautiful west coast where I was teaching at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. I earned a masters and Ph.D. at the Department of Folklore at Memorial University in St. John's.

The University of Maine won its second national tide in 1998-99. After hanging around the nation's top five for most of the season, UMaine easily won first round and quarterfinal NCAA Tournament games, then dramatically defeated Hockey East foes Boston College and New Hampshire in overtime to capture the championship.

Alcoholism : Medicalization By The Masses In Post-Prohibition America, Stephen Raymond Patnode
Theses
The medicalization of America is typically presented as a top-down, doctor-driven phenomenon. I argue that in the case of alcoholism, this model leaves out the community-level social activism of individuals who were identifying themselves as members of Alcoholics Anonymous. Any description of the popularization of the disease concept of alcoholism that does not take into account the efforts of these individuals is missing a key element.
