This paper forms part of a panel presentation and discussion that re-evaluates the Summit Series from a more critical perspective than the nostalgic rhetoric of the recent, 2012, 40th anniversary of the event. This part of the panel presentation will examine this question: What factors have served to enshrine the Series to the Mythic and Mono-mythic Levels? Roy MacGregor is perhaps the most prolific of Canadian writers to use hockey as the subtext and text for his writing. His most well-known work, The Home Team: Fathers, Sons, and Hockey, succinctly, is an intimate portrait of the father-son bond in and through the game of hockey. More sweeping in national scope and significance of hockey is Home Game: Hockey and Life in Canada which MacGregor co-authored with hockey legend Ken Dryden. A Case Study In Amateur Conflict: The Athletic War In Canada, 1906-1908, Don Morrow

The major objective of this article was to examine the issues prominent in Canada’s amateur ‘athletic war.’ Officially, the schism boiled down to a disagreement between two groups over whether or not amateurs could be allowed to participate with and/or against professionals in team sports while still retaining their amateur standing. The two warring factions were the Canadian Amateur Athletic Union (CAAU) and the Amateur Athletic Federation of Canada (AAF of C); in reality, it was an ideological power struggle between the emerging centre of sport in twentieth century Canada, Toronto, and the revered hub of organized sport in nineteenth …
