For over two months during the summer of 1880, eight young members of the Champlain Society made daily excursions, on foot and by boat, around Mount Desert Island. They collected plants and birds, and dredged small animals from the mud of Somes Sound. They stared at the rocks along shore and took photographs. Under the leadership of “Captain” Charles Eliot, son of Harvard President Charles William Eliot, the students were on the Island for the summer to “do some work in some branch of natural history or science.”

The Maine Memory Network: Re-Imagining The Dynamics And Potential Of Local History, Stephen Bromage
Maine Policy Review
Stephen Bromage explores the Maine Historical Society’s experience creating, nurturing, and sustaining the Maine Memory Network (www.mainememory.net), a nationally recognized statewide digital museum. In particular, the article focuses on the opportunities that the digital humanities create to foster collaboration, to engage communities in the practice of history, and to collapse traditional geographic and institutional boundaries.

Economic And Technological Innovation In Maine Before The Twentieth Century: Complex, Uneven, But Pervasive And Important, Howard P. Segal
Economic And Technological Innovation In Maine Before The Twentieth Century: Complex, Uneven, But Pervasive And Important, Howard P. Segal
Maine Policy Review
Maine had a long history of economic and technological innovation which began long before it became a state in 1820. Over the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, woolen mills, shoe factories, paper mills, hydroelectric power and utilities, and other components of mainstream America’s industrial and commercial revolutions became key parts of most Mainers’ daily lives. This article argues that the blue highway signs one passes on entering Maine—Maine: The Way Life Should Be—conceal much of Maine’s actual past and present, especially its rich and complex history of innovation.
Maine Library History, Melora Norman
Maine Library History, Melora Norman
Maine Policy Review
From the earliest small private and university libraries of the 1700s to today’s high-speed Internet-connected institutions, the history of Maine’s libraries mirrors the development of the state and provides a sense of the concerns people had for access to information and education. Melora Norman describes the development of various kinds of libraries in Maine and the opportunities and challenges they have faced over time. She notes that the 20th century was a time of increasing professionalization and standardization in Maine’s libraries. During the late 1990s through the present, libraries have been changing dramatically as they shift from a focus on …

Divided Ownership, Wild Speculation: An Investigation Of The Connections Between Thomas Hutchinson And Land Speculation In Eighteenth Century Maine, Cory Michael Davis
Divided Ownership, Wild Speculation: An Investigation Of The Connections Between Thomas Hutchinson And Land Speculation In Eighteenth Century Maine, Cory Michael Davis
Honors College
This paper will highlight the clashes between the Kennebeck Proprietors and Thomas Hutchinson, the last Royal Governor of Massachusetts. The Kennebeck Proprietors were a company of influential Boston merchants who saw the Kennebec River valley as a lucrative opportunity on the Maine frontier. As the Proprietors expanded their claims Thomas Hutchinson often interceded to block their aspirations. These land disputes highlight the ambitions of the Proprietors and the actions Hutchinson took to block them. It would be these clashes that would motivate the Proprietors to have a direct interest in the events of August 1765.
The August 1765 attack on …

A Sampler From The New Historical Atlas Of Maine: Religion In Maine, Burton Hatlen, Joshua M. Smith, Peter Lodge, Michael Hermann
Maine Policy Review
This article offers an example of work-in-progress on a significant project to develop an historical atlas of Maine. Although an article depicting religious settlement in Maine may seem far removed from the policy analyses typically featured in the journal, religious participation is a fundamental aspect of civic engagement in the United States. Thus, we feature here a glimpse of Maine’s religious heritage. We also present Maine Policy Review’s first full color pullout, which is intended to give readers a visual as well as textual portrait of religious settlement in the Kennebec Valley and Portland through the first half of …

The Boys Of The Island : P.I.'S In The Maine Lumberwoods, Edward D. Ives
Dr. Edward D. Ives Papers
On the evening of March 19, 1984. a large crowd of Island folklore enthusiasts braved a snowy night and the threat of a power blackout to attend a lecture by "Sandy" Ives, author of books on Island folksong makers Larry Gorman and Lawrence Doyle. The event was memorable; Professor Ives shared his subject with new friends and old, told the stories and sang the songs. The lecture was part of the Second Annual Island Lecture Series. "Leaving Home: Migration from P.E.I."
Lumbercamp Singing And The Two Traditions, Edward D, Ives
Lumbercamp Singing And The Two Traditions, Edward D, Ives
Dr. Edward D. Ives Papers
What I will do in this short paper is to describe singing as it occurred in the lumbercamps of Maine during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. What was its function, when, where, and (in broad terms only) how was it done; who were the singers, and what was the basic repertoire? I will then take my own early assumption that there were two traditions in the Northeast: something called "lumbercamp" or "woods" tradition and something called "local" tradition. I will wind up by redefining these two traditions and something called "local" tradition. I will wind up by redefining …

The Effects Of The Embargo Of 1807 On The District Of Maine, Blakely Brooks Babcock
Maine Bicentennial
The Embargo of 1807 was passed by the United States Congress on December 22nd 1807. It marked the culmination of American attempts to deal effectively with the warring powers of Europe and to prevent their depredations on American ships and seamen. With all foreign trade cut off and coastal trade increasingly difficult, much of Maine's economic life was at a standstill for the duration of the fourteen-month embargo. The restrictive laws came at a time the District of Maine was engaged in a profitable and growing trade with ports all over the world.
The Life And Work Of Larry Gorman : A Preliminary Report, Edward D. Ives
The Life And Work Of Larry Gorman : A Preliminary Report, Edward D. Ives
Dr. Edward D. Ives Papers
Lawrence Gorman, "The Man Who Makes the Songs," was born in Trout River, Lot Thirteen, on the west end of Prince Edward Island in 1846. As a young man he worked on his father's farm, in the many shipyards along the Bideford and Trout Rivers, as a fisherman, and as a hand in the lobster factories along the shore from Cape Wolfe to Miminigash. Up to about 1885 (age forty), he spent many of his winters in the lumberwoods and his springs on the river drives, mostly along the Miramichi River in New Brunswick. Then he would usually return to …
