In response to the challenges brought on by the onset of the pandemic, the Queens College Special Collection and Archives (SCA) created the “Student Help: Lived Experience” student fellowship, designed to be completely remote. The project is an initiative to further document the activities of Queens College students who participated in both the Virginia and South Jamaica Student Help Projects in the early to mid-1960s. The Virginia Student Help Project was an intensive education effort during the summer of 1963 in Prince Edward County, Virginia where public schools were closed for five years in massive resistance to integration. Educational justice is a major global challenge. In most underdeveloped countries, many students do not have access to education and in most advanced democracies, school attainment and success are still, to a large extent, dependent on a student’s social background. However, it has often been argued that social justice is an essential part of teachers’ work in a democracy. This article raises an important overriding question: how can we realize the goal of educational justice in the field of teaching? This book review of Segregated Schools and Unfinished Business assesses each author's views on the question: can schools be agents of social change? Both books also illustrate that there is much more work that needs to be done in order to fulfill the letter and spirit of the Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954.

Emancipation, Elevation, And Education: Black Educational Institutions In New York City During The 1830s, Kristopher B. Burrell

This conference paper studied the significance of African Americans' efforts to organize around education in New York City during the 1830s. There was a proliferation of black-led educational institutions in the aftermath of slavery's end in the city. These institutions were part of a broader effort to prove that African Americans deserved full citizenship in the State and country during the 1830s. What was happening in New York City was not occurring in a vacuum and the paper briefly puts what was occurring in New York City within a regional context, as well.
