It is often said that the majority of stories written by war veterans in the 20th century are disillusionment plots. But is that still the case in the 21st century? Are young men and women still going into, for example, Afghanistan with high ideals that are shattered during their deployment, and write books about their disillusionment? In this paper, the preliminary results are presented from a study into military books. Based on Friedman’s plot theory, this study compares all 54 autobiographical books published between 2001 and 2010 by Afghanistan veterans in three different languages from five different countries (the Netherlands, …

Original and typescript of diary and account book kept by Coolidge, chiefly of his trip from Baltimore to New Orleans and back, 4 November 1822 to 14 May 1823. Homesick for his family, he describes his sometimes tedious, sometimes terrifying travels by stagecoach, steamboat and schooner. He offers unflattering comments about his time in Kentucky.

This is the first qualitative empirical study of international development volunteering. The book contributes theoretical knowledge on International Volunteering Sending Agencies (IVSAs) and examines practitioner experience in development volunteering in the context of emerging policy developments. Critical analysis highlights the impact of global and social changes and provides a nuanced understanding of development volunteer motivation, and the relationship between volunteers and sending agencies. The book also puts forward an agenda and model for volunteer sending that addresses the complexities and diversity of the volunteer experience.
