Why Wikipedia Often Overlooks Stories Of Women In History, Lara Nicosia, Tamar Carroll Mar 2018

Why Wikipedia Often Overlooks Stories Of Women In History, Lara Nicosia, Tamar Carroll

Articles

Wikipedia's reliance on a volunteer editing base has resulted in a gender bias both in the quantity and quality of content around women. With less than 20% of Wikipedia's editors identifying as women, only 30% of biographical entries have been written about women and entries on women tend to be shorter and more focused on relationships and family roles than entries on men. This article explores the causes of Wikipedia's gender bias and offers ways that both individuals and institutions can help improve Wikipedia's content around women.

John H. Vincent: The Other Co-Founder Of Chautauqua, Timothy S. Binkley Jan 2018

John H. Vincent: The Other Co-Founder Of Chautauqua, Timothy S. Binkley

Bridwell Library Research

This address, delivered at the Chautauqua Institution Hall of Philosophy on July 20, 2018, reviews the life of John Heyl Vincent (1832-1920) and his relationship to the Chautauqua Institution. Vincent was an American Methodist clergyman and bishop and a leading figure in the Sunday School movement. In 1874 Vincent and businessman Lewis Miller (1829-1899) established an innovative, trans-denominational Sunday School teachers’ training event on the shores of Lake Chautauqua in southwestern New York state. Under the leadership of Vincent and Miller, that event developed into the Chautauqua Institution: an annual summer-long celebration of the arts, religion, education, and recreation, and …

Emancipating The Passive Muse: A Call For A Feminist Approach To Writing Biographies On Historical Women, Ina C. Seethaler Jan 2018

Emancipating The Passive Muse: A Call For A Feminist Approach To Writing Biographies On Historical Women, Ina C. Seethaler

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

This essay analyzes two popular biographies on historical women to interrogate how a focus on gender has shaped the genre: Nancy Ruben Stuart’s The Muse of the Revolution: The Secret Pen of Mercy Otis Warren and the Founding of a Nation (2008) and Jung Chang’s Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China (2013). I argue that biographers who perpetuate gender stereotypes miss a momentous opportunity during the current life writing boom in the United States to educate readers on women’s social, cultural, and political contributions worldwide. In proposing that feminist-informed biographies are more accurate, complete, and make social …

Review Of John James Audubon: The Nature Of The American Woodsman, By Gregory Nobles, Matthew Guzman Jan 2018

Review Of John James Audubon: The Nature Of The American Woodsman, By Gregory Nobles, Matthew Guzman

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

When we think about American ornithology, John James Audubon is often the first name that comes to mind. As evidence to Audubon’s lasting ability to enrapture readers, it bears repeating that an original Double Elephant Folio of Birds of America sold for an astounding $11.5 million in 2010 (2). Yet, for a man who produced such stunning and memorable visual and literary work on the avifauna of North America, some of the important details of his life and origins have remained highly contested. Even though Gregory Nobles’s new biography is not explicitly tied to the study of the Great Plains, …

American Prometheus: Carnegie's Captain, Bill Jones, Tom Gage

Trade & Scholarly Monographs

American Prometheus: Carnegie’s Captain, Bill Jones presents a compelling historical memoir of the illustrious life of rebellious steel genius and inventor, Captain Bill Jones.

Hero of the Civil War and Johnstown Flood, Captain Bill Jones built and supervised the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, which in its first five years advanced to the rank of the world’s most productive and profitable steel mill. His “hands-on, all over” style solved Carnegie’s production problems on the spot, enlisted baseball teams from the Works’ departments to defuse ethnic strife, promoted the eight-hour work day, and patented inventions, including the Jones Hot Metal mixer, which …

Book Review: Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography - Representing Canadian History Through Graphic Art, Brock J. Vaughan

Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections

This paper explores how graphic art, specifically in the comic-strip form, can represent events of the past and engage readers in historical narratives. Chester Brown’s Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography tells history in a unique way by depicting heightened moments of drama in Riel’s life during the Red River Rebellion. Through vivid illustrations, Brown involves readers in the imaginative process and helps readers uncover Riel’s character and the choices he made during the series of events before his hanging for high treason in 1885. This paper contains original interpretations of Brown’s comic-strip biography, coupled with scholars’ opinions and critical analysis …

Devotion And Suffering In The Life Of Johannes Kepler, Anthony Jenkins Jr. Jan 2017

Devotion And Suffering In The Life Of Johannes Kepler, Anthony Jenkins Jr.

Mathematics Class Publications

Various heroes of Christianity have been celebrated by Protestants for centuries. From followers to devout disciples, Christians have recognized certain individuals as being role models. These people have stood as leaders of the faith and spanned from tax collectors, to fishermen, and even to government authorities. Often overlooked, though, were those who made advancements in the sciences, philosophy, mathematics, and other scholarly fields. In certain professions and studies, Protestants were persecuted and forced to deny their beliefs. Some chose to make what they believed as the center of their motivation which would lead to even greater achievements. Of those people, …

Leonardo Fibonacci, Betsy Patterson

Mathematics Class Publications

Leonardo Fibonacci was a mathematician in the late twelfth to mid-thirteenth century. He grew up and was trained in North Africa, where his father worked. His major contributions to mathematics can be found in his books- Liber Abaci, Practica Geometriae, Flos, and Liber Quadrotorum. Little can be found about his Christian faith, but fruits of his faith can be seen through some of his work. As a mathematician, I would like to exemplify Christ in all aspects of my life.

Gottfried W. Leibniz was a philosopher and mathematician who lived in Germany from 1646 to 1716. He first gained a bachelor's degree in philosophy, then later earned one in law. As his life went on, he made many contributions to the mathematical world. From discovering differential and integral calculus to creating the binary system of arithmetic, Leibniz changed today's world. He worked also with physics, dynamics, and attempted to create a calculating machine. While making these discoveries, he had the privilege of working with many different scholars and mathematicians, namely Weigel, Boineburg, and Huygens. With the help and guidance of …

Galileo Galilei: A Christian Mathematician, Kelsey Harrison Jan 2017

Galileo Galilei: A Christian Mathematician, Kelsey Harrison

Mathematics Class Publications

Galileo Galilei was born on February 15, 1564 to a famous music theorist. Galileo quickly made his own name known across Europe. He worked tirelessly to not only improve his own mind but, in his eyes, that of the Church’s as well. He made many significant discoveries and contributions to Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, and Christianity. Even though his work was continually rebutted by the Church, he persevered to defend findings until his death in 1642. This paper examines Galileo’s life and his life’s work. It also looks at how Galileo’s Christian faith encouraged his work, and how his work encouraged …

Christiaan Huygens: The Discovery And Doctrine Of A Mathematician, Anna Norris

Mathematics Class Publications

This paper examines the life of Christiaan Huygens, a Dutch Mathematician born in 1629. Through this examination of his life, I discuss his training, a few of his colleagues, and his major mathematical discoveries. These major discoveries include Saturn's rings, the pendulum clock, and the Wave Theory of Light. The paper then moves into Huygens's faith and the effect that this had on his work. Knowing the faith of this mathematician gives us some insight on his motivations and beliefs behind his work. Through research, I was able to find some information on how his beliefs brought about his theories; …

A Research Of The Life Of Charles Babbage, Luke Dawson Jan 2017

A Research Of The Life Of Charles Babbage, Luke Dawson

Mathematics Class Publications

If the name of Charles Babbage does not in any way seem familiar, you do not stand alone. Babbage remains one of the most unpopular geniuses in our history, a mastermind of a variety of subjects, including mathematics, engineering, politics, economics, philosophy, and religion. Babbage would create the first "calculating machine," and created blueprints for other machines that could have led to the first modem-day programmable computer in as early has the mid 19th century. However, the story of Charles Babbage is indeed a tragic one: the totality of his projects were not fully completed until the late 20th century, …

Wandering Through "Wonderland": Lewis Carroll's Life As A Logician, Author, And Man Of God, Mattie Couch

Mathematics Class Publications

Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, lived his life as a man of God, a skilled logician, and a masterful author. Much can be learned through a study of his life and his successes. Tracing his early years, his studies, and his accomplishments, while recognizing the accolades and admonitions of his contemporaries, reveals much about the influences on Dodgson’s life. To separate his faith from his work is impossible and speaks to the precedence his beliefs held over all of his other ambitions.

Bernhard Riemann, Andrew Crook Jan 2017

Bernhard Riemann, Andrew Crook

Mathematics Class Publications

Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann, or Bernhard Riemann as he is commonly known, was a devout Lutheran and brilliant mathematician, and was both for all his life. His results are indispensable, providing us with a non-Euclidean geometry, the path to general relativity, and perhaps in time, the key to the problem of the distribution of primes. His faith in God was exemplified both through his mathematics and his home life for as long as he lived, and his example is one to which we may aspire as both mathematicians and simply as Christians.

Gloria Anzaldúa’S El Mundo Zurdo: The Necessity Of A Historical Assessment, Malik Raymond Jan 2017

Gloria Anzaldúa’S El Mundo Zurdo: The Necessity Of A Historical Assessment, Malik Raymond

Honors College Theses

This thesis revolves around Chicana lesbian feminist Gloria Anzaldúa and one of her more important theories, El Mundo Zurdo. El Mundo Zurdo was a theory that focused on the marginalized people and the need for unity amongst them; however, up to this point, no historical analysis has been done on this theory. Through piecing together information from interviews and Anzaldúa’s literature, this thesis serves as a biography of her first forty years of life to address from where the theory came and becomes a bridge to link Anzaldúa to the wider Chicana, Third World feminist, and gay and lesbian …
