Making Peace In An Age Of War: Emperor Ferdinand Iii (1608–1657), Mark Hengerer
Making Peace In An Age Of War: Emperor Ferdinand Iii (1608–1657), Mark Hengerer
Central European Studies
This English-language translation of Mark Hengerer's Kaiser Ferdinand III: 1608–1657 Eine Biographie is based on an analysis of the weekly reports sent by the papal nuncio’s office to the Vatican. These reports give detailed information about the daily whereabouts of the dynasty, courtiers, and foreign visitors, and they contain the gossip of the court in addition to weekly analysis of some political problems. This material enabled the author to report on daily life of the dynasty and to analyze the circumstances under which policy was made, which has led to a balance between the personality of Ferdinand III …

American Prometheus: Carnegie's Captain, Bill Jones, Tom Gage
American Prometheus: Carnegie's Captain, Bill Jones, Tom Gage
Trade & Scholarly Monographs
American Prometheus: Carnegie’s Captain, Bill Jones presents a compelling historical memoir of the illustrious life of rebellious steel genius and inventor, Captain Bill Jones.
Hero of the Civil War and Johnstown Flood, Captain Bill Jones built and supervised the Edgar Thomson Steel Works, which in its first five years advanced to the rank of the world’s most productive and profitable steel mill. His “hands-on, all over” style solved Carnegie’s production problems on the spot, enlisted baseball teams from the Works’ departments to defuse ethnic strife, promoted the eight-hour work day, and patented inventions, including the Jones Hot Metal mixer, which …

Promises Of Power: A Political Autobiography, Carl B. Stokes
Promises Of Power: A Political Autobiography, Carl B. Stokes
Cleveland Memory
For a brief time in Cleveland, I was the man of power. I had what no black man in this country has had before: direct control of the government of a predominantly white population. That power came to me because I seized a situation that had made me seem like a savior to men who ordinarily look on blacks as an alien and vaguely dangerous force. –Excerpt from chapter 1 “Big Man, Little Man.” Other chapters include “How to Get Elected by White People,” Carl Junior,” "The Media,” “The Police,” and “The Future of Black Politics.” Carl B. Stokes …

Much More Than Ragtime: The Musical Life Of George Hamilton Green (1893-1970), Ryan C. Lewis
Books and Monographs
This document preserves and synthesizes the unpublished information within the Green Family scrapbooks and miscellaneous archival materials with existing source materials to construct an accurate and documented account of the musical life of George Hamilton Green (1893-1970) hitherto deficient. The stereotype of Green as a novelty ragtime xylophonist diminishes as the many facets of Green’s diverse musical career are revealed: talented musician, versatile performer, recording and radio artist, pedagogue and author, composer-arranger, and influential instrument designer, as well as formidable athlete, talented artist-cartoonist, and devoted family man. George Hamilton Green is a significant twentieth-century American musician who lived an extraordinarily …

Gentleman George Hunt Pendleton: Party Politics And Ideological Identity In Nineteenth-Century America, Thomas S. Mach
Alumni Book Gallery
George Hunt Pendleton is a significant but neglected figure in the history of nineteenth-century politics. A Democrat from Cincinnati, Ohio, Pendleton led the mid-western faction of the party for much of the nineteenth century. He served in the Ohio Senate for one term before serving in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1857 until 1865. He was a leader of the Extreme Peace Democrats during the Civil War and was General George B. McClellan's running mate in the presidential campaign of 1864. Losing both the election and his seat in the House, he spent almost fifteen years out of public …

Worth Their Salt, Too, Colleen Whitley
Worth Their Salt, Too, Colleen Whitley
All USU Press Publications
A follow-up to the highly successful Worth Their Salt, published in 1996, Worth Their Salt, Too brings together a new set of biographies of women whose roles in Utah's history have not been fully recognized, despite their significance to the social and cultural matrix, past and present, of the state. These women-community and government leaders, activists, artists, writers, scholars, politicians, and others-made important contributions to the state's history and culture. Some of them had experiences that reveal new aspects of the state's history, while others simply led lives so interesting that their stories beg to be told. This new collection …
God's Renaissance Man: Abraham Kuyper, James Edward Mcgoldrick
God's Renaissance Man: Abraham Kuyper, James Edward Mcgoldrick
Faculty Books
Like his predecessors in church history, Kuyper was a person of massive intelligence, immense learning, terrific energy, and zealous faith. He nevertheless received great adulation from his beloved kleine luyden (little people) of the working and lower middle classes, many of whom struggled to survive economically and few of whom could afford a higher education. Throughout his long career as a pastor, journalist, educator and political leader, Kuyper maintained close contact with the common people and communicated with them effectively, even though he was far above them in intellect and formal learning.

SWODA: Windsor & Region Publications
Her Stories pieces together the lives of eleven women who lived or traveled through the Detroit River region in the 18th and 19th centuries. Unfortunately, some of these women did not leave behind any records of their own making. Like so many other women from the past, some of their stories must be told using scraps and pieces of the better known histories recounted by men; a booklet based on the exhibition at the Francois Baby House: Windsor's Community Museum.

This biographical study is primarily concerned with the political, economic, and social activities and interests of Mr. Denious while he served in the capacity of State Senator and Lieutenant Governor. In the course of state growth and development, it is unfortunate that important contributions by certain dedicated public servants are little known or remembered. In a small way, it is the purpose of this study to help rectify this situation.
San Martín: One Hundred Years Of Historiography, Katharine Ferris Nutt
San Martín: One Hundred Years Of Historiography, Katharine Ferris Nutt
Fort Hays Studies Series
It is the opinion of this writer that the answer to the riddle of San Martín may better be sought in his relations with Lord Cochrane than in those with Simon Bolívar and the Quayaquil controversy, an avenue which historians have for years followed without arriving at any satisfactory conclusion. It is this writer's purpose to show that the misunderstandings regarding San Martín's character and his place in history stem from a very logical and comprehensible situation.
