Second-wave feminism and the sexual revolution changed Americans’ relationship with not only sex and gender but also religion. In the late 1960s, Kent Philpott, a seminary student in San Francisco, experienced these changes first-hand. After feeling a calling to minister in Haight-Ashbury, Philpott increasingly devoted himself to one cause—remedying homosexual men and women. Philpott’s story, however, remains an underreported part of the history of contemporary conversion therapy. More specifically, Philpott’s charismatic beliefs have been lost in the expansive scholarship on sexual reorientation change therapies. Hitler’s Atrocities Against Allied PoWs cannot be regarded as an academic study of the fate awaiting captured Allied servicemen and women. Its narrow focus, socio-political goal, and limited engagement with the historiography prevent it from serving as more than a survey text or springboard. Chinnery attempts to tie the individual fates to a larger argument that the German armed forces and their security force compatriots were systematically responsible for the abuses described in the book. While the individual cases are compelling and some have a clear connection to explicit policies, the book does not succeed in linking its other examples …

In 2018 Exploring Rockingham’s Past (ERP) launched. ERP is an online repository created to house local records from the Rockingham County, Virginia circuit court. Just a little over a year before its launch, Clerk of the Court, Chaz Haywood entreated facility and graduate students within the history department of James Madison University to help develop community access to the records housed within his institution. Sadly, over the decades the records of the courthouse had fallen into disarray, rendering them useless. A consensus has developed among historians that widespread panic consumed the American public and government as many came to fear a Bolshevik coup of the United States government and the undermining of the American way of life beginning in early 1919. Known as the First Red Scare, this period became one of the most well-known episodes of American fear of Communism in US history. An introduction to the life and work of Lemuel Haynes (1753-1833), a neglected figure in American History as the first biracial pastor to lead an all-white Congregation in North America. The topic of this paper addresses an understudied and essential aspect of early America, political discourse from minority voices in the colonies. Using the Memphis race riot of 1866 as a case study, this essay argues that historians need to reevaluate their use of the word “riot” to describe the racial violence of the Reconstruction and Post-Reconstruction eras. Although most historians agree about the nature of the violence in Memphis and events like it, they nevertheless continue to refer to them as “riots” rather than “massacres.” This essay hones in on three qualities the word “riot” connotes: spontaneity, mutual aggression and justification, while noting their inconsistencies with the massacre in Memphis and suggesting that similar discrepancies may characterize similar events during the …

In late 1981, President Ronald Reagan announced far-reaching sanctions on a critical Soviet infrastructure project, a 3,000 mile pipeline connecting the Soviet Union to Western Europe. American allies had carefully negotiated “The Deal of the Century” with the Soviets to minimize its energy dependence on the Middle East, but the Reagan administration flouted the concerns of his allies to test the resolve of the United States’ ideological archenemy. In the United States, the Sixties witnessed the rise of the political New Left, the counterculture, and the interracial cooperation between white and African American youth activists. However, few scholars have examined the interracial coalition between the white New Leftist and Native Americans after the exclusion of white activists from the Student Nonviolence Coordinating Committee in the late 1960s. To address this gap, my research focused on the New Leftists’ participation in the occupation of Alcatraz by activists of Indians of All Tribes from 1969 to 1971. This article argues West Point responded to the changing strategic environment from the end of the Cold War through the post-9/11 period by innovating its curriculum. Over the past several decades, however, the academy’s educational model has remained remarkably stable, rooted in an enduring commitment to a rigorous liberal education as the best preparation for officers confronting the inherent uncertainties of future wars.

In light of Martin Scorsese's popular movie "The Irishman," it is a good time to reassess Jimmy Hoffa. He's probably the most famous union leader in American history, but the only thing most people know of him is that he ran the Teamsters and was closely connected to the Mafia. He is often seen as nothing but a corrupt, evil, greedy sellout. The reality is a little different. In the nineteenth century, private family life was meant to mimic the ideal republican society, providing the necessary foundation for future patriotic citizens. When families failed to adhere to the idealistic notions of the private sphere and descended into conflict or divorce, however, the very foundation of American society was in danger. An analysis of divorce and family disputes in local contexts like Vanderburgh County can provide a window into the realities of private conflict within American families, especially in comparison to wider national trends.
