The Politics Of Medicine At The Late Medici Court: The Recipe Collection Of Anna Maria Luisa De’ Medici (1667 – 1743), Ashley Lynn Buchanan

This dissertation analyzes the social, cultural, and political significance of recipes at the late Medici court. In doing so, it examines how the late Medici court used medicinal and pharmaceutical patronage to maneuver politically and socially as well as increase the court’s cultural cache throughout Europe. By the beginning of the eighteenth century, it was clear that the Medici line would end and that the Grand Duchy of Tuscany would become a satellite state of a larger European power. Also includes poems, recipes, a trade card for Louisville’s Alexander House, a sample print strip from a telegraph machine, and genealogical data.

Handwritten note of Mary Alice Kimbrough, 8 January 1982, to Dorthy Bailey Johnston, thanking her for a Christmas gift of homemade bread, describing a family holiday reunion, and enclosing handwritten recipes. Ms. Kimbrough, who suffered from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, took great pains with her printing and these recipes and note exhibit her exceptional hand.

From Pickled Peaches To Pink Poodle: What Do Community Cookbooks Tells Us About Foodways And Urbanization At The Turn-Of-The-Century In Sacramento And Stockton, California, Kate Helfrich

Industrialization and rapid urbanization characterized the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in many aspects of domestic life. Scholars have used community cookbooks to document changes in domestic roles at the turn of the twentieth century. This study uses community cookbooks to look beyond domestic roles and to trace changing foodways during the period from 1870 to 1930 in the northern Central Valley of California. Nine cookbooks from Sacramento, California and five cookbooks from Stockton, California reveal changes in foodways during this time.
