Personal papers of various members of the Blaisdell family, especially of Frank W. Blaisdell. Includes legal documents, receipts and correspondence of his business dealings and activities as executor of various estates. Also includes five daily diaries between 1879-1889 and records reflecting his involvement with the Baptist church in South Waterboro, Maine, and with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows lodge in Waterboro.

Finding Aids

Contains correspondence about the locomotive, its history and its transfer from place to place. Many letters are to and from W.J. Sweetser, professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Maine, and H.D. Watson, head of the mechanical engineering department. Other letters are from Louis Ibbotson, librarian at the university, John R. Lyman, chair of the mechanical engineering department in the 1970s, and university presidents Arthur Hauck and Howard Neville. The collection also contains information about the history of the locomotive, newspaper and journal articles, and photographs.

This small collection contains William Shipman's files from his participation on various committees and studies for hydroelectric power projects in Maine.

The files are arranged alphabetically by subject using headings assigned by Professor Shipman. The material from his work as a member of the Citizens' Dickey-Lincoln Project Impact Review Committee consists of records of committee meetings, correspondence, and reports which reflect the work of the committee. Some of the correspondence also reflects Professor Shipman's ambivalence toward this work and the feeling of futility caused by a lack of information about various alternatives to the Dickey-Lincoln project.

The collection contains two daybooks maintained between 1764 and 1839 by Daniel Bucknam and his sons, Shepherd and Calvin Bucknam, of Minot, Maine. The books contain itemized accounts of goods and services sold by the Bucknams and reflect the use of trade and barter in their lives.

The first volume was used mostly by Daniel Bucknam, although the inclusion of later dates probably indicates that it was used by Daniel's sons as well. The second volume has the name Calvin Bucknam written on the inside cover and contains some biographical information about Calvin and his family.

The records of 40 small electric power companies later acquired by Central Maine Power Company make up this collection.

Each company forms its own record group within the collection, and companies are listed in the order in which they were acquired by CMP. Records of only a few companies date after their acquisition by Central Maine Power. The earliest acquisition, of the Sebasticook Water Power Company, took place in 1911, the latest, of the Casco Bay Light and Power Company, took place in 1965.

The collection consists primarily of business correspondence, 1878-1881, to Frederick Wood. Most of the correspondence is from J.A. Hurd and concerns their lumbering operations, orders, shipping, etc. The remainder of the collection contains receipts, 1872-1881, to Wood for various goods received.

The collection contains ledgers and maps of the timberland business owned by several generations of the Webber family. The ledgers include primarily correspondence and financial information. The maps provide information about the family's land holdings in northern Maine.

The ledgers are arranged by the company function they represent: executive, financial and production. The collection begins with copies of outgoing correspondence, 1955-1960, from G. Peirce Webber; much of it concerns acknowledgments of rent received for campsites on Webber land. Copies of deeds, permits, etc., follow, along with a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, 1903-1907, concerning land and lumbering.

The collection contains personal papers of Clarence C. Stetson. No papers from his career in government service are found in the collection.

The file of correspondence, 1919-1921, contains incoming and outgoing letters about Stetson's investments and other financial matters. The business correspondence folders deal primarily with management of his timberland holdings and tax, policy, and investment issues surrounding them. Correspondents include Merrill Griswold, Isaiah K. Stetson, and Charles Stetson, an attorney in Boston. The files of receipts, 1920-1921, are all for personal expenses and purchases, such as hotels, automobiles and clothing.

The Stetson family papers consist primarily of the business and personal papers of George Stetson, his sons Edward and Isaiah Kidder, and Isaiah's son Irving G. Stetson. They reflect the involvement of the Stetsons in the lumbering, slate mining, ice harvesting, and banking businesses in Bangor, Maine, the northern woods of Maine, and in New Brunswick.

The papers are arranged in two series: Business Records and Personal Papers. Each series has several sub-series. The collection was largely unarranged upon its arrival at the Fogler Library so the processing archivist imposed an arrangement scheme, basically chronological within each series. Folder titles …

The collection consists of four unidentified volumes. By their dates, it is assumed that they mostly concern the firm of E. Plummer and Sons, incorporated in 1901.

The daybook, 1898-1904, gives an account of amounts of corn, meal, flour, oats, bran, etc., ground for various customers. The cashbook, sales book and time book concern the sawmill and lumberyard. The sales book lists shingles, clapboards, laths and lumber as products, and the weekly time book gives employee names, time worked and rates of pay.

The Penobscot Lumbering Association records consist primarily of legal, financial, and lumbering records maintained by the Association from the time of its incorporation in 1854 through the early 20th century. The collection contains financial records of Oliver Moulton's sawmills. The volumes do not specify which sawmill is included in each individual volume. Volumes give information about lumber sold, surveys done for Moulton, lists of men who worked for him and their wages, items purchased for use in logging camps, and agreements between Moulton and others to cut, haul, and deliver logs from property owned by Moulton.

The financial records of an electric utility in Maine. Included are daybooks, cashbooks, journals and ledgers. Also included are annual reports to the Maine Public Utilities Commission, property valuations, and property tax studies. Two volumes of records of the Farmington Falls Electric Company are also found in this series. Series II contains a small amount of material from the Franklin Light & Power Company and Wilton Light Company. Financial information from the Phillips Electric Light & Power Company is also included, as well as an account book from the Kingfield Line Company.

This small collection contains copies of documents concerning the founding and operation of the Granby-Alaska Company. The documents appear to have been assembled for some purpose, perhaps to prepare for the numerous lawsuits against the company. Included are the agreement and declaration of trust establishing the company in 1906 and documents from John C. Green outlining the requirements and costs for work on the mine in the first year. The collection contains records of William Engel's timberlands business and of the firm of Lowell & Engel. The records are mainly from the logging and lumbering operations carried on by Lowell & Engel in the years after William Engel's death in 1909.

The major part of the collection contains bills and receipts to Engel's companies. Those from 1902-1908 are primarily bills for insurance, taxes, etc., on Engel's many land holdings. The bills and receipts from 1909 on are from the logging and lumbering side of the business and focus on supplies and equipment needed for the various logging camps.

The records of the post office include registered package and letter records, stamps, parcel records, money orders, Postmaster's correspondence and postal guides. The bulk of the records date from 1870-1890. Some of the letters reflect Daniel Deasy's and J. W. Handy's former professions as sea captains.
