The paper was inspired by the unveiling of a monument erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in honor of Joseph Gist on 21 October 1934. Hardcastle presented the paper at a meeting of the Samuel Daviess DAR chapter in Bowling Green, Kentucky in October 1934.
