To counter these new so-called realities, he looked to “limit” the impact of war through a combination of the Early Modern re-invention of Roman military principles, appeals to service, and the tenets of Theresian Catholicism. To commemorate the centenary of World War I, Europeana has initiated a couple of projects under the header of Europeana 1914-1918. One of these is Collection Days. Modelled on the British antique road shows, at a Collection Day, people turn up with their 1914-1918 memorabilia and have them digitized and catalogued on the spot. They also get to tell their family story, which is the main thing. In this project, the object supports the story rather than vice-versa. The European Film Gateway 1914 (EFG1914) plans to digitise films about World War 1 that have never been seen outside a cinema or on television. This is the first time that such films will be made available on the Internet via two web sites: www.europeana.eu and www.europeanfilmgateway.eu. European archives are digitising the footage, which includes newsreels and documentary films as well as fiction films from and about World War I. This study presents a narrative history and quantitative analysis of national campaigns in the United States, and analyzes how successful campaigns provide entertainment, foster empathy, and develop a national peer group with norms and networks that encourage giving. Our historical survey found that charity telethons flourished in the 1960’s and 1970’s, but changes in tax regulations and competition from other networks and cable television led most of them to discontinue operations in the 1980’s and 1990’s. In recent years, internet and text messaging fundraising have become important, but benefit concerts continue to generate a significant percentage of total revenues. In …
